      Hey Kris,
From what I hear lucid dreaming masks do not work automatically. They still require the user to recognize the cue. I was considering purchasing a nova dreamer back in 2004, but reconsidered due to price...
I'm developing an android app that would have functionality similar to REM dreamer (REM speaker) and it is free. If you consider buying REM dreamer or a similar sleep mask, check Android or IPhone market for "Sleep trackers" like Sleep as An droid, or "Smart Alarm Clock", or my app. They will soon overtake REM dreamer, in terms of functionality because developing software is a lot easier than developing hardware, and there's no wires involved.

this one time i was doing the CAN-WILD (set a 3 second custom alarm to wake up you but you don't move and then WILD)

i was already dreaming when the alarm played and i remembered what it was for and i became lucid. the point is, maybe you can try audio cues like that while your Rem Dreamer is in the mail

but i knew a guy here on DV who had a good amount of success with the flashing light device. i don't think he was lucid every night. he did have to train himself to recognize the lights a little bit i think. yeah it is safe.

edit: how's the phone detect REM while sitting on the mattress?

its supposed to wake you up but i set it up on my computer and maybe the volume wasn't loud enough to jolt me awake

its only 3 seconds. you don't have to move to turn it off.

      I got one of those!
I recommend that you learn to lucid dream VERY well before getting one of those.

Lucid dreaming, (in spite of what many who would love to sell you the Secret would have you believe,) is a discipline in the same way physical fitness, playing a musical instrument or learning to draw are disciplines. Patience, determination and ongoing effort are necessary to achieve and sustain lucidity. Results do vary widely, as they will between individuals practicing any discipline, but The REAL Secret remains true - there IS no Secret. The temptation to resort to paying for hidden secrets, purchasing gadgets or using supplements is great indeed when you are just starting out, but these all prove frustrating and useless, (not to mention expensive,) until the basic skills are attained. An 18th century Cremona violin may produce amazing results in the hands of Itzhak Perlman, but in my hands it would be a costly joke because I never learned to play at all. So it goes with gadgets and supplements; they may become useful and interesting later on, but they have no place in the beginner's arsenal.

Everything (and much, much more) that anybody needs to get started in Lucid Dreaming can be found right here in The Mist, and the price is right. Dreaming is free. So is lucid dreaming. . . but "free" doesn't mean effortless or instantaneous. Lucid dreaming is a discipline, and disciplines take patience.

I bought one of these and I've quite a bit of success with it. I'm not sure my success was directly connected to the divice, though, because when I got it I started practicing awareness much more frequently. I also started thinking about every single light source in waking life. So yeah, it worked for me.

I agree with what Oros said. I had already had a fair share of lucid dreams before I got mine. Before I stopped using it I tried a few interesting things that sort of worked. Instead of using the cues as a dream sign, I used the to wake myself up. I put the light strength thingy to max and then told a mantra before going to bed. The idea was that the light cue would wake me up, as well as remind myself to DEILD right away. I had some success with that, but I'm sure it would work out better if I practiced it some more. It was definitely a smooth way to wake up, since it can sometimes be very hard to fall back to sleep or lay still right after waking up.
