There is no technique that works for everyone and everytime, so there is not so much to improve.

Although when you try to remember to become lucid in a dream, I assume that you do your mantra before sleep? Then if you think about it, the vivid dreams (the dreams you want to become lucid in) happens when you are in rem sleep and that will take you one and a half hour before you start dreaming this way, sometimes you just magically remember it and there is no explaination why.
But if you do a WBTB. Then you will wake up near the rem stage and it will be easier for you to be aware.

I usally meditate before bed what mantra should I use and I'm not sure what WTBT is.

I also meditate before bed =)

But WBTB stands for (Wake Back to Bed). It means that you wake up sometime during the night (5-6 hours after sleep is recommended)
When you wake up you stay up for a couple of minutes or just for a few seconds, and then you can either just fall asleep again or you can use a technque.
What ever you choose you are still near rem and your chance to become lucid is much higher.
