Awareness is a very important requirement for lucid dreaming, improving it can be tough, after my friend recommended me to watch the series Prison Break, where a genius called Michael has a mental 'problem' called Low Latent Inhibiton.
This condition is real and causes some people to be unable to filter out the constant stream of stimuli that your body relays to your mind, some people are better at dealing with this and generally the higher your IQ the more information you can handle.
So you are sitting on your seat, did you only just consider the feeling of the seat on your body when I spoke about it, that's because your brain filters out this information.
Why am I saying this? Because when I try to raise my awareness I consider my body as a huge sensor, when I do this I feel all the stimuli and it's pretty tough to concentrate, I almost get the image of the shape of my body in my mind as... I'm feeling everywhere.
So I want you to try it, I'm going to start an awareness game here to see how long you can maintain awareness!
Most phones have a timing function, so get it out and start the timer, when you forget about being fully aware, stop the timer... obviously if you forget for ages it doesn't count.
