Persistence pays off my friend. Don't be discouraged by unsuccessful attempts, they are learning experiences. When you realize it's a dream, just go with it. Don't focus so much on the excitement that comes from initial lucidity, yes that's enough to wake you. It's best to have multiple reality checks that you perform one after the other in order to eliminate any possibility that your first should fail. You must however, remember to perform these multiple checks just as often as your original check, otherwise when it's comes time in the Dream to do it, you won't. You also may want to incorporate more reliable checks.
The way I do it is first I try to use telekinesis, if that doesn't work, I try to remember where I am and how I got there. If I can remember well enough then I try to push my finger through something solid, like my hand. Having three checks that you perform frequently is a good way to induce lucidity as having only one is likely to have you kicking yourself in the morning, when you wake from the Dream your check failed to reveal. For me at least, my mind has made it more difficult for me to become lucid. I've used the same check for a while now, but recently it hasn't been working. I'll try to move something without touching it and it won't move, so I assume I must be awake. Even when I have this nagging feeling that I'm not awake, I dismiss it because the reality check indicated I was. Just this morning I had one of those Dreams.
May i also introduce you to the world of supplements. I have been experimenting with a few natural supplements that boost certain aspects of sleeping and dreaming. While I would suggest that you try to attain a lucid state on your own at least the first time, there have been many success stories that result from supplement use. Galantamine, melatonin, and choline are among the most successful supplements out there. None of which have had any reported negative qualities to them. So I give u this advice.... Keep trying
