It seems to me that you aren't adding emotion while you're questioning yourself. This is very important because without emotion, questioning and RCs will only become mindless, and you will not notice them in dreams.

"Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."

I never really did reality checks, but something that helped me is if you think you might be dreaming assume that you are before you assume you aren't that way in a dream you are more likely to gain clarity and become lucid.
Dreams are a part of reality, sadly too many people ignore this fact.

What PostScript99 said, emotions can help with that. Also sounds like your awareness was low, i suggest checking out this thread: http://www.dreamviews.com/wild/13181...prep-part.html , even though it's part of WILD tutorial, it can help with lucid dreaming overall.
Either way, think positive, it's still progress that you see dreams like that, keep practicing awareness and you will be lucid next time!
