Oneironaut's AVID Method (Audio-Visualization Induced Dream)

Here is a pretty good idea that I came up with for inducing dreams. I've been experimenting with it for a while, and it's resulted in some of my most vivid, exciting, immersive dreams yet:

Excerpt (sp) in reply to another post:

      Lol That's cool shit, man.
I have a lot of matrix-esque dreams, primarily because I base my dream experience often on the world of the matrix.
Here is an experiment for you that usually brings me some of my most vivid dreams:

If you have any of the matrix movies (or any other action-adventure movie you like. LotR, maybe?) on your computer, or some sort of video player that you can loop over and over, play it while you're going to sleep. It doesn't matter if you have the video on, or turn off your monitor and just listen to the sound. (I usually play Matrix and Reloaded back to back and let them loop through the night when I want to have an adventurous dream like this.) When you're about to go to sleep, set whichever movie you want to listen to first at the begining of one of the action sequences. As you're falling asleep, recreate the entire scene in your mind, putting yourself into it.
This is where having good visualization comes into play. You should do your best to map out everything that you're hearing, putting yourself into the situation, and doing your own thing, not just necessarily whatever Neo (or whoever is fighting in the movie) is doing, but make whatever you're doing coorespond to the sounds you're hearing. (It's hard to explain, but I hope I'm doing a good job of it.) As you're falling more and more asleep, keep your mind trained on listening to the sounds of the movies playing, and visualizing what you'd be seeing as if these sounds were going on around you.
I had one HELL of a vivid matrix-like dream last night....one that would have dominated my dream journal, had I not went to sleep high, and forgotten the dream damn near upon waking. Lol. I remember having it though, and I remember it was Badass to the 15th power. I just can't remember what all happened.

Anyway. If you've got a good imagination, TRY THIS, as I also invite Anyone who wants to try it to give it a shot. Maybe I should start a thread on this ...Audio-Visualization Induced Lucid Dream method. AVILD? (Name subject to change? Lol) And see what kind of results people come up with? [/b]
Of course, this can be altered, to induce Lucid Dreams, as stated above, simply by adding a sort of "Once this visualization begins to take form, and I can see what I'm imagining, I will know I'm dreaming" suggestion. It can also be changed to suit whatever movie, program you feel like inducing into your dream.

Those of you with good recall, and good visualization, try this out sometime, as I'd love to hear what kind of dreams you all get out of it. I'll be doing the same, periodically. 8)

You are saying that by listening to different things as you go to sleep such as different movies this can impact the sort of dream you have i have never thought of it this way so by watching and listening to different types of music this can have a impact on the kind of dream you will have amazing i will have to try this out sometime.

Exactly. It helps in two ways, actually. When you are falling asleep, it helps set your mind to visualizing your surroundings, and giving you a sort of theme to shoot for. Your mind will be attuned to constructing your imaginary world, and will help set the stage for your dream.
Also, late in the night, during the longer REM periods, when you are begining to slowly surface to the waking world, you will usually begin to hear a lot of the audio while you are still sleeping and/or dreaming. This is usually the most effective time for this method, as before I'm waking up, I'll begin to hear audio directly from the movie, and it will often coorespond to whatever I'm seeing in my dream, with personal changes from my subconscious mind.

And yup. Music does this too. Of course, it is not foolproof. It doesn't work All the time, but I'd have to say that a good 75 - 85% of the time I train my mind on something I'm listening to, as I'm falling asleep, it will make its presence felt in my dreams.

Wow you have quite the unique ideas i would never have thought to utilize the sounds for the creation of my own dream world i usually just thought of them to be used to put me to sleep but now thinking of all the different movies and what not the dream possibilities have just had a new door open to them we can watch hundreds of movies while going to sleep and have our dreams based upon them dang this idea is amazing cant wait to try it out. Think im gonna start out with BraveHeart

Okay, this I like! First of all, I think we should all list some movies to try this with, and report back on their effectiveness. This would be a great adition to the Research Team Forum. Ooo! Ooo! What about some software that lets you create custom soundscapes with soundclips that you would want in your dream. Like the sound of swordfighting, or the ocean, or just a collage of movie clips. They could be set up to play at random intervals and in general groupings for a new soundscape every night! You're a GENIUS!

I'll keep my list updated on this post so as not to add too much clutter:

      Lord of the Rings
      Anything by Quentin Tarantino
      Star Wars
      The Princess Bride
Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail (that could get weird)
      What Dreams May Come
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

A great addition to a good idea. 8) Nice.

So I decided to give AVID another try last night. I'm going to sleep, listening to Reloaded, beginning to get HI and everything...and just as I'm falling asleep my comp freezes out of the blue and completely destroys my mojo. LOL. Bastard. It's a conspiracy, I swear!
Oh well, so I ended up just goin to sleep, because I was already too relaxed to fix the problem.

I'll be back with a list of movies when I'm not working, and have the time to think of some good ones. lol.

      Thanks for the addition O'niero.

I was going to start a similar topic, stating that visualizing a movie just from the audio would help create cross-connections in the brain and strengthen visualization skills. That would help create more vivid dreams.

I came across this thought while baby-sitting. Of course, the kids want to watch the same movie every day. I noticed with animated movies the audio and video are created independent of each other. Therefore, it takes care to ensure they match up. There is great attention to detail, especially with facial expressions and gestures. Most rendered details are recreated from the film of the people doing the vocals.

My two suggestions are Monsters, Inc. and The Incredibles. Monsters was put out before The Incredibles, and it's much simpler. The technology isn't as good, so there is no real change of clothes, the backgrounds are pretty simple, not a lot of action. That can make it hard to remember what's going on. Incredibles is much more action packed, I can usually remember longer chunks of scenes. If you aren't that good at visualizing, practice with Monsters, Inc., since it's a simple one.
