Yeah, when you practice reality checks you really need to actually question your surroudings, otherwise they will become a pointless routine and won't trigger anything in dreams either.
You should always feel a degree of genuine skepticism when you perform reality checks - always think for yourself "how can I be sure that I actually am awake?" how can I prove it to myself right now?".
Don't get discouraged by how realistic everything feels, sometimes you can feel just as sure in an actual dream and then wake up.
This has happened to me many times, like "bah, of course I am awake, everything feels so real!", only to wake up and slap myself in the face.
