      Vitamin B6 brain explosion

Based on people's recommendations I tried melatonin and B6. The first time I tried it, I went right to sleep which was great, and then while sleeping my mind raced a million miles per minute, that was a bit uncomfortable.

I waited about a week and tried again, this time my brain felt like it was going to explode. My whole head felt under stress. The stress carried over into the next day.

Since then I've gone with just the melatonin and been happy. It knocks me right out when I'm really anxious about trying to sleep. I won't be going back to the B6 again.

dont the 2 counter each other? Melatonin putting you to sleep and B6 keeping you highly aware? Doesnt sound like a good combination man lol

Isn't it one of the most common combinations though?

You make a perfect sales pitch. Seriously - asleep and aware - that's the recipe for lucidity, isn't it?

You'd need to be carful with the melatonin though - a normal dosage is waaaaay too much and will just knock you out completely. You need to get the 1mg pills and cut them into like 10 pieces in order to get a dose that allows for lucidity. And B6 - if I remember right, isn't that one that you should already have fully absorbed in your system well before going to sleep? As in take 1 every morning, but definitely not near bedtime?

Haha yea but I meant in the "not so good" way, since BatteryCharged's brain almost exploded lol.

I use B6 regularly, and it mightily improves my dream recall. If taken with L-tyrosine it also considerably increases the probability of lucidity. But because it is toxic in very high doses, one really should refrain from taking more than 200 mg in one go, and no more than 100 mg daily on average. Maybe it will in fact cause brain explosions, if taken in extremely high doses, although reports to this effect are few, and far between.

I second Darkmatters' view on melatonin - to an extent. 3 mg melatonin will prevent me from dreaming, but recently I have gotten hold of 1 mg slow-release melatonin, and so far this has yielded three lucids in two nights (separated by five days). On both occasions I also used Huperzine A, which was definitely a major factor, but the low and steady dosing of melatonin gave an excellent backdrop for dreaming.
So ... is this the real universe, or is it just a preliminary study?

I had one of my longest continuous (but bizarre) recent dreams at about 4.5 hours after bedtime, having taken 3mg of melatonin 1 hour before bed just the other night. I find 3mg of melatonin at bedtime frequently produces early morning insomnia though, as it did this time. When I can get back to sleep after the 4-5 hour waking though it also usually results in REM rebound and often long, vivid, and usually lucid dreams, again, when I can get back to sleep. I usually feel fairly well rested after 4-5 hours on 3mg melatonin so it's sometimes a real challenge.

Nighttime 50mg B6 usually doesn't do much, and 100mg keeps me wide awake. I haven't tried more than 100mg B6 yet.

1mg melatonin usually just creates a mild well of drowsiness and doesn't affect dreaming much.

With supplements the rule I've found is: try, try, try again. Everyone's different. Don't stick to "the rules." Maybe start with the rules ("never take galantamine at bedtime", for example), but move outside of them to find what works for you. Even the same dosage under similar circumstances I find yield differing results with me.

Yeah, I've heard B6 and melatonin is a good combination. As far as I know, B6 helps convert tryptophan to serotonin, and this hormone, along with melatonin, I believe are the two most important hormones to regulate the sleep cycle, so this way you get the whole package.

But I agree both B6 and melatonin have to be taken with caution. I think melatonin can be toxic if taken in high doses during long periods of time. B6 isn't so toxic, but at least for me, if I take it too late at night, it makes me wake up several times during the night, which makes me feel tired in the morning. Maybe this has to do with what you experience.

I like physiology a lot but I'm not an expert, so maybe I said something wrong. I hope it helps, anyway!

I don't really see them as opposites.
Your brain is just as aware while you dream as when you are awake, so the way I look at it is that melatonin makes you wanna go to sleep, and vitamin B6 makes you more aware while dreaming.

Of course man, but when I made the comment i was referring to the amount of each. If you take too much B6 its going to keep you wide awake so you wont be able to sleep. But you have to experiment with it though, finding the right amount for each substance. Id assume more B6 than melatonin and you wont get what youre looking for. Ive tried it once, even the lowest amounts of B6 keep me too aware and I cant fall asleep. We're all different though
