Even if you are aware of the fact that you are dreaming, it doesn't necessarily mean that you are fully aware and fully rational. The center in our brain that governs critical thinking is inactive when we are in REM, I guess it's slightly more active when we are lucid dreaming. But what might happen is that you become aware that it is a dream but not aware of what really matters.

For example sometimes I become lucid but then I continue to follow through the story of my normal dream. I was chasing someone because they took my bag and then become lucid, I am most likely still going to spend my time getting the bag back.

And it's the same way with not knowing where you are sleeping, it means that you are aware but not fully aware of your sense of self and reality.

With practise this problem auto-corrects itself though.

So just keep up the good work.

      Hey there,

Not entirely the same, but I've had quite a few dreams where I have 'false' beliefs about where I'm sleeping during lucidity. I think I'm actually sleeping in one of my old homes (I've moved around a lot), and be surprised when I wake up in my current newer home, or I'd think its a work day and I can't stay in the dream too long cause my alarm will go off soon, only to wake up on a sunday.

Like Mastermind said, there's many levels of clarity and awareness in dreams. Additionally, it's quite possible that certain facets of your consciousness will be at almost full clarity, and certain other facets will still be mostly dormant, leading to lucid dreams with false beliefs, lack of memory, or illogical thinking.

ya there are definately different levels of lucidity where you know your dreaming but you don't have full concsiousness.... but when you get to higher levels of conciousness you'll know your in your bed where you are... who's sleeping next to you, what you did the day before... honestly you probably won't care a lot because you'll be so into your dream world... but its really cool and trippy being in your dream and fully aware that your laying in your bed

There are varying levels of memory, just as there are varying levels of lucidity. I have had LDs in which I could not remember where I was sleeping, or even some in which I tried to remember what I did in waking life yesterday and thought “Oh yeah! It was such-and-such”, only to wake up and realize I was completely wrong! On the other side of the spectrum, I've had LDs where I remembered both where I was sleeping and what I was thinking about just before falling asleep, or remembered many of my LD goals and had to stop and decide which one to actually do this time, and a recent one where I saw a car dealership sign in the dream and immediately recognized, during the dream, that the reason it appeared here was because I had seen it in a home video I checked briefly the previous day.

As you retire to bed look at your surroundings then later when you become lucid and know you are dreaming remember the safety of your bedroom… Personally I never feel any sense of fear when I am truely lucid dreaming.
“One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. Which road do I take? she asked. Where do you want to go? was his response. I don't know, Alice answered. Then, said the cat, it doesn't matter.
