In my experience becoming aware of dream signs is like grabbing smoke. It's always out of your reach.
For example if I always dream about busses I can then start making reality checks on busses in real life, but the problem then is that I no longer dream about busses...
The reason for this is simple and that is that our dreaming mind is (simply put) our sub-conscious mind experienced. So when we consciously focus on something we'll most likely no longer dream about it.
This might seem like a problem at first, but then when you just embrace this fact and consciously focus in on ALL your THOUGHTS and ALL YOUR DAILY EXPERIENCES and ALL YOUR FEELINGS and EMOTIONS & PROBLEMS and YOUR WHOLE LIFE what is left for the subconscious to dream about then? Well for me atleast my dreams then just consist of strange scenarios that is very simple to become critical and aware of. But my dreams are no longer this chaotic mess of things happening over and over, it's just a very calm experience with randomness in it.
View your dreaming as a way for the brain to cope and sort out your mind, but understand that if you focus on them and sort them out YOURSELF during the day, then our dreaming process is no longer a process of therapy and cleaning it's just a playground for the consciousness.
So dream signs shouldn't be used as a means to learn about when you are dreaming something, it should be interpreted (by yourself) as a way to figure out WHY you are dreaming something.
When your mind is calm, with no emotional problems or memories that is needed to be sorted out, then lucidity can naturally occur.
The reason we become unaware of our dreams is so we can live a virtual movie with our 5 senses and have an experience that helps us deal with our mental problems, kind of like Teddy Daniels in the movie "Shutter island". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iaYLCiq5RM
But when we are free from our own mind's therapy session we can experience the mind freely. It's the same for real life! If you let the fears and troubles of your mind hinder you from living the life you actually want to live, you are not free and fully aware, you are most likely in auto-pilot, thinking and doing the same things over and over again during the day.

What's the way out? How to attain freedom from our own mind? By creating space between the watcher (that is in the mind) and the mind. When you are observing your own self-image you can laugh at it, and even if it's just a for a few seconds you will not only believe the truth, you will know the truth of "You are not your mind!".
And to be consciously aware of not being what your mind wants you to believe, isn't that what lucid dreaming is all about?
My personal recommendation to achieve this is meditation (which you can read about in the link in my signature).
So live a daily life of being conscious and your nightly life will follow.
I hope this advice helps and I wish you sweet dreams and a sweet life!
Peace!
