      WILD breathing problems

I've attempted WILD three times so far, unsuccesfully. The first time I didn't have the resolve to go through with it, the second time I became too awake, and it took me 2.5 hours to get back to sleep, but the third time went well, untill I stumbled upon two problems.

I've noticed that I don't have to wait for sleep paralysis to set in, I can force it. I can make my right arm go into SP right now, for example. I don't know if this is a common ability, but I use it in all my WILDs. The problem is, as soon as I go into SP, and my muscles start to twitch, I feel like I am being choked. I know this is just because of the paralysis, and nothing to worry about, but it brings with it a annoying, nigh-irresistable urge: The urge to take a deep breath, which I have to break SP for. I have to take my mind of the breathing process, then the urge disappears, but the problem is there not a whole lot I can focus on except for my breathing! So taking my mind off it is extremely hard, and I have not yet found a breathing rythym that allows me to keep SP.

In relation to not having a lot to focus on, how long does it generally take to begin to see hypnagogic imagery after the muscle twitches? Because I don't see a darn thing. If I force SP, I get the sensation of the black that I see from my closed eyes sort of washing over me, as if it is extending beyond my normal vision because I am going into it. But then it's still black. I must admit I have never been able to hold that state for more than about 15 seconds because of the breathing problem, but if I just saw some imagery, I could take my mind off my breathing! So If all I need to do is wait, I'm in a bit of a vicious circle here, because I have to take my mind off my breathing to see imagery, but I have to see imagery to take my mind off my breathing.. Does anyone recognize these problems, or can anyone think of a solution? I really need some help here, I think.

I started trying WILD properly last night. I also found a similar problem, at the same point. When my breathing became really shallow and rapid, I lost it, even though I ignored the exciting changes and stayed as calm as I could, to the best of human ability. This also made my heartbeat increase at a rate of knots. Is it just something that you become more apt at as time goes on, or are there techniques? :S

I had my first WILD lucid dream last night!

It seems to me like it takes FOREVER to get to the more vivid hypnogogia stages. It seems like you're trying too hard; I would recommend just letting your mind wander, but tell yourself every 15 seconds or so to remain awake until you start to see stuff moving.
For me it is WAY easier if you wake up an hour early in the morning and do it.

The mild stage usually begins with swirling in the blackness, and sometimes flashes of light or noise, or feelings of vibrations/quakes. The more vivid ones are like brighter swirling colors and more clear noises, like a hallucinagenic trip or something.

Last night's break-through happened during only mild hypnogogia. My mind started to wander as usual, and I was thinking about fishing...I imagined a scene of a beatiful river. I then remembered my Lucid Dream Task and imagined what it would feel like to run along the rocks of the river. After a minute or 2 I was in the dream, and attempted to dream-fly and it worked so I knew I was Lucid.

Tonight, I am going to try and remain awake long enough to see hypnogogia, but also attempt to imagine my river-scape, and running in it again, to see if that will work.

      Good Luck!

      breathing

      P.S. About the breathing.

I also think your breathing should be slow and deep, and you should be totally relaxed.

I use a 10 minute deep relaxation mp3 I found on the ares network to get to the sleep paralysis and slow breathing stage. After this, I just try and stay awake until I see stuff.

      Good Luck

Getting into SP isn't much of a problem for me, it's staying there!
Wolffe, it seems you and I have the same sort of problem, and I think the same solution will work for us both: not thinking about your breathing. I'm going to try to daydream tonight, and try to focus on that instead of my breath, but I don't think it will be easy. Anyone else have more suggestions or experienced this?
