REM sleep is more than rapid eye movement, it was just named that way for what happens, I guess. It's characterized otherwise by your brainwaves (alpha? I can't remember which), being that they are extremely similar to that of being awake. It's the last(fifth), deepest stage of sleep that's been catagorized as far as I know.
