Well, you don't have to have that attitude in your dream. But it helps. It's really just a means to an end, which is to not forget that you're dreaming. It's not a requirement so much as a technique, in a way . You could just stick to reminding yourself that you're dreaming.

By the way, it's not as much of a buzz kill as it sounds (although perhaps a little bit). For example, flying is still quite a rush, and in one my lucids I had a blast beating up some cops Matrix-style. The thing is, you try to stay calm and detached, but you can never really force yourself to be completely calm and detached. You feel how you feel! But making that effort does help keep you "grounded" and clear-headed.
