Often I wake up in the middle of the night, remember my dream and remember that i want to become lucid. I say to myself "When i fall asleep i will be dreaming, in my dream i will *insert desire*" I quickly fall asleep. I will i often get my wish and i am lucid for a little bit (able to carry out a few small desires). then however i lose lucidity quickly and resume a "normal" dream. How to i prevent that.

I dont have a dream jounal but i can remember 2 dreams a night

i only had a lucid dream half an hour ago 6:30 it just happend
I was in my driveway looking at my dads car the hazard lights were flashing so i got into the car and turned them off but it just lunched backwards onto the street then i realized i was dreaming i was in the passenger seat though and there were two stearing weels so slid into the other me driving the other side and put my foot down it was fun but i wanted to crash to see what happen unfortunatly not even a bus stopped me the car was industracble* i got out and tried to fly it took a while but when i was floating some guy knocked me back down and i couldn't fly after that then it faded away and i woke up

Why couldn't i fly?

Why didn't the car crash?

Often I wake up in the middle of the night, remember my dream and remember that i want to become lucid. When I start to lose lucidity I look at my hands and concentrate on knowing that I am dreaming, usually works and makes the dream seem more real too.

Hope that helps

Loss of lucidity usually occurs when you become too "involved" in the dream. The key to maintaining lucidity is to try and keep a calm, detached, analytical attitude during your dream. It also helps to constantly remind yourself that you're dreaming, either silently or out loud. I do both of these things, and I rarely ever lose lucidity anymore, although I still wake up from my lucids frequently.

But doesn't detachment interfere with enjoyment? For example, I want to fly lucidly (and I have done so), but I also want the joy that accompanies it, which means involvement, and the risk of loss of lucidity. Calm, detached, and analytical seem like buzz kills. Must be a middle way...

Well, you don't have to have that attitude in your dream. But it helps. It's really just a means to an end, which is to not forget that you're dreaming. It's not a requirement so much as a technique, in a way . You could just stick to reminding yourself that you're dreaming.

By the way, it's not as much of a buzz kill as it sounds (although perhaps a little bit). For example, flying is still quite a rush, and in one my lucids I had a blast beating up some cops Matrix-style. The thing is, you try to stay calm and detached, but you can never really force yourself to be completely calm and detached. You feel how you feel! But making that effort does help keep you "grounded" and clear-headed.
