Yeah you don't need to full hour, myself I'm wide awake from the moment I get up (unfortuately I can't recreate this when I actually get up for school ) so I only take like 5 minutes. Take as long/short as you need.

Yeah, do what works best for you. I only stay up for 30 min. at the most. More than that and I'm up for hours. Usually it's more like 15 minutes. I'm not positive but I think the whole hour to hour and a half thing has to do with syncing up with your REM cycles.
