By moving the finger while falling asleep, it appears that we keep a small section of the cerbellum active, which is enough to trigger lucidity. [/b]
However, the amount of space in the cerbral cortex devoted to fingers is relatively large. Maybe moving your toes would help if one cannot fall asleep when using the fingers since toes have a much smaller region.

That's a very nice suggestion! I have to try that!

you are waking up between REM periods, so u cannot go back into a dream and face darkness. the trick is to estimate when u r in REM andwake up then to go back into the dream.

The average person is in REM sleep after 4 hours of sleep (and it lasts about 20 min) but you also have REM sleep that lasts about an hour, which is between 5 and a half and 6 and a half hours of sleep.
So if you wake up after 6 hours of sleep you have the biggest chance of waking during REM. (if you're an average person )

no that's not what I said
look at the picture. The only problem is, there are many different pictures, all of them saying something different, but at least it's some kind of guide!

http://www.dreamviews.com/sleepstages.php The stages of sleep are explained on this site too. Basically, you have a REM period every 90 minutes and as you sleep, the REM period gets bigger, so it can reach even 30 minutes in the morning (of course it depends on the amount of time ypu sleep; I read in LaBerge's book that by increasing your sleeping time form 6 hours to 8 hours, you double the time of REM, thus doubling your chances of having an LD).

Made up my mind to make a new start,

Just my 2 cents: I try to remember to FILD whenever I awaken during the night and feel like falling asleep immediately. There is no point FILDing otherwise, might as well try WILDing if you do not feel like falling asleep immediately.

My first LD was after my first FILD experiment, also my last LD was after a FILD two nights ago. In both cases I did not feel much, but sensed hearing something - very brief tone or so (I have tinnitus, might be related to that). Two nights ago I got in a scary situation and turned suddenly and found myself in the darkness again. RC and I was able to start the LD again without waking in between. I rose from my bed again and left the bedroom 2nd time in the same LD. Does this happen to others? Often? Is it just that I assumed to be back in my bed and therefore I was?

Both times I have stabilized my dream vision by looking at my hand and rubbing them until I see clearly - this before attempting to leave the bed.

You have an REM period every 90 minutes.

Your first REM period is only 5 minutes long
Your second REM period is only 10 minutes long
Your third REM period is 20 minutes long
Your fourth REM period is between 30 - 60 minutes long

Every time you get to another REM period the REM period gets longer.
So, the longer you sleep. . . the more you dream.

The other stages aren't really important to lucid dreaming. Just the REM ones.

      Now you get it?
