      Problems with DILD

Well i've been getting into ld'ing and i've only had like 2 or 3 ld's, 1 of which wasnt even a dream i just realized i was dreaming sort of in between dreaming and waking up (weird).

I've been doing reality checks 15-20 times a day (the "what i did 5 minutes ago" RC) and i just cant seem to have many ld's.

This has been going on for about a month now. Im pretty good with reality checks, except i've been losing confidence for the past couple of days, so i havent done many rc's today or yesterday.

Is there something im just forgetting. Any suggestions?

sorry for being a whiner, i just want to know if im doing something wrong.

Random DILDs are luck based, so you might just be in a dry spell. Also, the thing about reality checks is that most people just do them out of habbit, therefore the reality checks pass in the dream because they are so used to having them pass when they are awake. The point of RCs is to question reality. You can just block your nose out of habbit every half hour, but you will accomplish nothing. Instead, take the time to ask yourself "why am I not able to breathe?", or "why are my fingers not going through my hand?". A simple RC is to just take a few seconds to look around, question reality and "be aware" of what is happening. It is this sense of "awareness" that you want to transfer into your dreams, so that you may question reality while you are dreaming, and not just perform some repetitive task. Also, you could try the WILD or MILD techniques, they aren't so "luck based".

Absolutely right. The thing you are experiencing is a DILD on the brink of awakening. Happens to me every time I wake up. Just as I'm starting to wake up is when I become lucid, every single time. It just means you're that much closer to having a full fledged DILD, but has Spartiate said, you must really take time to literally question reality. Have a look around you. I always try to convince myself that everything could just be a dream, as often as I can. (lucid living).

I agree with Pride. WBTB is the single biggest aid to DILDs. Personally, I don't do reality checks during the day - but manage to have 2-3 DILDs per week. These are almost exclusively in a WBTB scenario. I personally believe that meditation is helpful as well. It trains the mind to focus on one thing at a time. This will make it less likely that you get swept up into the dream fantasy due to numerous odd things happening around you. Traditional Tibetan dream yoga speaks to that in detail.

I like to do reality checks during the day, usually when I try to remember to perform one every time I start a new conversation or walk into a room.

Performing them more often is better, because that gives you more chance to remember them in dream.

The original WBTB concept leverages the fact that REM cycles lengthen as the night goes on. When you wake up afgter 5-6 hours, stay up for a while and go back to bed, there's a good likelihood that you'll hit REM very quickly upon falling asleep. This is beneficial as you just left the conscious world and probably have some "concious energy" still active in your mind. Hence it's easier to have a DILD.

This is in contrast to DILDs based on simply going to sleep at 10:00 for example, and hoping you'll have a DILD. The fact is, you won't even hit REM for about the first 85 minutes, which will leave any "concious energy" you had well in the dust. That REM period only lasts for 5 minutes, so you don't have much time.

Do you see why WBTB is beneficial to DILDs?
