OK the one time i tried this it really freaked me out. I had slowly looked down at my hands after semi-realizing i was dreaming because I obviously remembered the technique... but after looking at them everything around me became much more clear... and not only that, but the person I was with who was normal before then, suddenly became evil and when I told them I knew I was dreaming it seemed to infuriate them, and then I kicked their ass.

I've looked at my hands in lucid dreams...aside from noticing an extra finger that liked to dart in and out of my hand, nothing really changed. However, I didn't look away and back, away and back, away and back, like he wants you to. You could use any object in the dream other than your hands (according to what Don Juan said) and it would be just as effective. The only reason he chose to say hands was because I suppose hands tend to stay in the dream longer than other things. Looking at a table might be hard, cause if you look away and back it might be gone.

It seems like the hand rubbing technique, the key is to focus on something in your dream that you would rarely, if ever, see changed in the dreamworld. That way your mind stays focus on the dream rather than overtly controlling the dream.
