Well, my hints for you are the same that once applied to me.
You might be trying too hard. Do you prepare before starting an attempt? Because getting to the right mindset is just about 90% of a successful WILD. With practice, you'll be able to know what the right mindstate is like.
What you should be feeling before attempting is a calm and zen mind. Just like when you are meditating. Once you do get to that mindset, you'll be able to WILD way easierly. Staying aware won't be such a trouble, because your mind has calmed down.
Once you have reached the right mindset, do the processes you do usually. Remember that not seeing hypnagogic imagery is usual and shouldn't be a problem. If you really want to see HI, do the following: try to imagine a scene or an object with your eyes closed. It will be in this "layer" that hypnagogic imagery will show up: not the one of your sight, but the one of your visual imagery.
Once you have gone deep into WILD, and noticed your body is restful, watch out for tricks by your body: your body will cause an impression of discomfort, as if saying "I'm not comfortable, move!" But this is only a trick to see if the your mind is already sleeping or not. You shouldn't move by now. But be aware that sometimes this happens so slightly that you don't even notice it.
You will by any time now start feeling the so-called vibrations: they will involve hallucinations of any kind. It is important that you stay aware during this stage, otherwise you might lose consciousness. Eventually, the vibrations will be gone and your body will feel unusually numb. You're in Sleep Paralysis.
Finding the right time to move once in Sleep Paralysis takes trial and error. But watch out: you might think that you actually woke up and ruined your attempt, when actually you are dreaming you ruined your attempt. A Reality Check is the first thing to be done after any WILD attempt, no matter if you think it wasn't successful.
I believe I explained it all. Any doubts, shoot
