All times of the day, but especially after waking up to check for false awakenings or when anything unusual happens.

I've heard you should do it 20 times a day to make it a habit that will carry on in to your dreams. I think any amount will at least help though.

I don't know which are the most effective. I believe the nose plug is pretty effective.

I usually do. Some people suggest you pretend you are dreaming and think about what you would do if you were dreaming.

Hope I have been a help. Thanks for scaring me into posting again. I have just been viewing the forums for the last week or two.

Do an RC everytime U wake up from bed even after naps. U can space them about 30min apart during the day...that way U'll get the idea that each time U do an RC...it'll 'last' for 30min if Ur not dreaming, after which U may be dreaming.

Digital watch RC is the most effective for me at least...

When I do the RC and it tells me I'm not dreaming...I don't tell myself I'm awake. Instead I tell myself that the 'dreaming wave' that will make my watch go crazy hasn't arrived yet which makes it less boring to do the next RC.

You should RC throughout the day, but don't make a chore out of it. I think someone said about 50 a day is ideal. Use a few different RC's to make sure you're awake. Personally I conclude that I'm not dreaming... yet.

I heard that it's good to do a RC when you experience a change in scenery. It happens a lot in dreams, so maybe you'll catch it. I think the nose-plug RC works the best, and when I'm in public, I just constrict my throat so that I can't breathe, and then try to breathe.

I tend to dream about doing things I feel guilty or paranoid about, such doing or possessing drugs, and stuff like that. Things you worry about tend to frequent your dreams. So do a reality check when you're doing something that invokes a negative, emotional response.

      Hey there,

In my opinion, you're asking the wrong person

These questions you're posing, you should be asking them to yourself. Experiment, try things out, you'll learn via trial and error. These things are highly variable: what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for someone else. For some people reality checks seem to have no effect at all, and yet others can't get lucid with them.

Its all a matter of finding out what works for you.

      Just my 2 cents,

Why don't you read the tutorials? Why doesn't anybody read the tutorials??
Sorry, just read what the website has to say about reality checks. Acutally you really are better off just reading evrything on the website, then going to the forum occasionally for questions. Anything helpful enough in the forum is made a tutorial.

The best thing is to do a reality check as much as possible, and i find the best reality check to perform is to observe your surroundings and ask yourself if you are dreaming because in dreams your surroundings are always strange (things in the wrong place, strange objects, odd looking people etc).

To know if you are in the dream or waking world. Without knowing what's real you can never be lucid.

All yesterday i thought i would do observation checks like every 10 minutes all day and every 45 minutes or so do my usual reality checks which include observation checks but i am cutting out the observation checks on their own out because last night in every dream i recall i was doing observation checks and there were odd things going on but i didn't find it odd, like i woke up in the middle of the night i woke up and done a reality check. I fell asleep and had a false awakening so i asked myself if i was dreaming and observed my surroundings and i recall i had a different carpet but found this normal.

The positive is that the last two nights have involved reality checks but the observation checks have let me down in both. I have corrected the reality checks so tonight should be the night i break my 9 day lucid drought.

I do a nose plug or throat block check right when I wake up, at various times during the day, and before I go to bed. Also, in the morning and at night I usually do a check with my watch and/or alarm clock. If you have any recognizable dream signs, do an RC if/when you see one.

Constant RC is the best way. The whole thing about dream yoga and watching all your surroundings all the time is bomb. Except that I don't meditate, I just try to constantly be aware!

oh my i want to leave.

yet i feel compelled to post.

soooo. i have a milestone, sort of halfway house-ish statement.

      1. i do not need to reality check, because i am God.
      2. i already told you who i am yet you persist with the questioning.
      3. you cannot blink while in astral form.
      4. hell no, (no pun intended) i like to wake up, then i like to whip my eternal slaves until they bleed, then i violate myself to reassure that everything is real.
That's my favourite reality check, and definately my favourite 7 letters of the alphabet.

I don't know the right answers to the questions, but I'm going to give you my two cents and hope that my opinion helps .

You should do reality checks whenever something unusual happens or when you come across a dream sign. The more the better (I'd say about 20 is great). The nose RC always works for me, also a more tough one is the one where you ask yourself what have you been doing, why you are there etc. Whenever I do a RC and it's successful (meaning I'm awake) I look around carefully telling myself that everything I'm seeing is very real, but in no time I'm going to have the opportunity to wake up in a dream and.. do stuff .

      Good luck!

I think the threader wants to know if your reality checks have led to LDs or not, not just what they are. At least that's something I'd like to know.
