Saying "I'm lucid" while awake, doesn't really make you lucid either. If you knew you were dreaming, then you were dreaming. If you said you were dreaming, but didn't know it/realize it, you weren't lucid. |

Yeah, from my experience you have to know you are dreaming to be lucid. Recently I've had an unfortunate amount of dreams where I say I'm lucid and end up watching myself dream. Basically dreaming about being lucid. |
