      Conjuring Dreamsigns?

Hello, I just read about Lucid Dreaming, and now I'm very exited about it, and really want to try it.

Let me start by saying hello, as I'm new, I'm 15 years old and haven't been able to remember my dreams since a few 3-5 years ago. Now I heard about Lucid Dreaming, and I'm determined to learn it.
I'm certain that I'm determined enough to learn it, even though I haven't been able to remember dreams since that long ago. I'm not gonna give up trying before I can- ... Before I can fly!

I got loads of paper and a pen close to my bed for my Dream Journal, and I'm preparing to remember!

      But, there's a question I was thinking about;
Would it be possible to, while awake, to imagine some signs that I would use for my dreams as Dreamsigns?

What I have in mind so far, is a big Sapphire (see avatar) on a ring. Since I imagined it, I've been trying to connect the Sapphire to the word "Dreamsign"
At first it was just the sapphire, but I figured that if I connected it too much to my life, it wouldn't cause a reaction when I'm sleeping. So I thought about the word thing.

Would it work? I've been thinking about Lucid Dreaming all day, and the Sapphire since 14:00 or something. The word thing came not long ago.

Now I've also been trying to imagine the picture of a white dog walking on two legs with a big scepter with a ruby on top of it, he also has a red bandana around his neck. In my imagination, he looks abit like a character from some game, so I figured that if he appeared in my dream, I would atleast remember him being there.

But still, I could imagine that if I wake up, and if I'm unsure if I saw him in my dream or not, I'll just conclude that "No, it was just from when I imagined it yesterday." and that's not good... So, if there are any other ways to 'buff' my chances of remembering anything that I can put in my journal tomorrow?

I actually think the dog will fail if he appears, but the sapphire might work, or will I just accept it as a real thing, since it's been part of my day today?
A thing to note is that I havent ever held a sapphire in my hand, that's why I chose a sapphire. I have a tigers eye gem, but I think if it appeared in my hand in a dream, I would accept it as real instantly.

      Thank you, Dreamers!

      Hi Maeni, welcome to Dreamviews!

Dream signs are chosen because they appear frequently in your dreams. You don't just choose something to be your dream sign, you look over your dreams (this is very easy if you have a dream journal) and find elements that appear frequently. If a sapphire was a common element in your dreams, then you could use it as a dream sign, but you don't want to try to use it if it doesn't appear in your dreams a lot.

Once you've found your dream signs, you reality check when you see them in real life. The idea is to get into the habit of reality checking whenever you see these dream signs. Since they appear frequently in your dreams (that's why you chose them), you should reality check much more often in your dreams, by force of habit.

As for your question about dream recall, I'm not exactly sure what your question is. You should usually be able to remember if a memory is a dream memory or not, regardless of whether or not you were thinking about it the day before.

If you have any other questions, or I was unclear about something, feel free to ask!

      to DreamViews, Maeni!

I had the exact same idea as you when I started. Unfortuntately it never worked out too well. Maybe it will work for you; you can try.

I think Wavefunction is right; you have to figure out what your dream signs are alredy, and go with them.

Mostly, just overall awareness of your state on a regular basis is the most important thing.

      Good luck!

      Ah, thanks to you two!

I'll try to keep the sapphire thing in my mind for the next few days. It wont affect my dreams otherwise would it?

But, I'm just thinking if there are ways I can make the chances I will remember my dreams when I wake up bigger? Because it seems that when I wake up, I wake up slooooowly, so that when I'm 'actually' awake, my dreams are already long forgotten. If this happens, it will be impossible to write anything in the journal.

So are there any methods that can make me remember long enough for me to write it down, or a method to make me wake up more instantly, so I have better chances. Or both?

      Thanks again!

Keeping the sapphire on your mind shouldn't negatively affect your dreams at all. If it does actually start appearing frequently in your dreams, this could help you.

You may want to look over the dream recall tutorial, which lists some helpful methods for remembering your dreams.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

No, the ring can't hurt, and anything that reminds you of dreaming during the day is helpful. Hey, you never know, you might have better luck with it than me, so you might want to keep trying. Just don't forget to use other dream signs too.

Well, you could try using an alarm, or trying not to move when you wake up. It's just a matter of practice really. Try to remember your objective; remind yourself before you go to sleep. Have a journal near-by, maybe even in bed with you. Try to remember your dreams back-wards; start with the last thing that happened and ask yourself what happened before that, over and over. I think that is helpful. Maybe think about the dream some after you wake up; sometimes more details will come to you later.

Alrighty.. I'll read that tutorial, and I'll try to remind myself before I fall asleep.
And I'll keep your advice in mind.
I'll report back tomorrow, hopefully I'll have been flyin' and stuff like that!
Not really, I'm not rushing it at all! I'll give it some days, weeks, months, whatnot.
*starts humming I believe I can fly*

      Thanks alot you two!

Yeah, let us know how it goes! If you're interested, you can start a thread in the dream journal forum so we can all read and comment on your dreams - and give a little advice.

I'm glad we could help, and, as always, feel free to ask if you have any other questions.

I was just going to say that!^^^ Keeping a journal is good motivation for recall, and fun because you can get feedback.

Keep trying--you'll get it sooner or later!

Oh, yes, just thought of another thing ;P

Have anyone here tried (and posted about) to watch a horror movie or a few, doing reality checks every time something scary in the movie happens, and then going to sleep afterwards? That's basically the only dreams I remember - Nightmares, so if I make reality checks to everything nightmarish, could that not trigger a lucid dream after watching horror movies and dreaming about it?

I don't have someone in particular in mind who has tried that, but it sounds like a good idea.

Heh, I might try that then

Anyways, here's my progress from the night:

I start off trying with the HILD, with counting to 100 and imagining those weights comming on me. At that point, it was really the only technique I could remember. So I tried it, a few times.
First time, I completed it, no sleep, nothing really happened.

Second time went like the first, just a little worse.

Third time I lost count like a gazillion times while counting to hundred. At one point, I got something that seemed dreamish.
It was some sort of plane that was apperantly trying to land. It looked like a strange parachute. Imagine a huge egg, cut it in half from the top, make this half shape into a parachute - Yellow and with red stripes going over it. Under it (inside the shape) was a little cockpit, really small, looked like maybe a cat could fit in there. And it was hovering towards the ground, looking very much like a prototype of some plane, since it was flying like those paper planes...

I don't know where it came from, i'm not even sure if a fell asleep before I got it, it was very quick, like 3 seconds and then I was back to counting.
I wrote it in the journal anyways.
      Third attempt, like 2nd.
I looked at the clock and it was 05:20, no sleep yet, unless I actually slept while I got the plane thing.

I tried a few more times, nothing still. I think it turned 06:20 or something before I fell asleep for real. I woke up somewhen around 8 AM, but I didn't realize that I had been asleep before like 9 AM when I began thinking about what I did between that 6 AM to 8 AM... No real memories, but something about chopping a huge tree to crawl over some big ehh, what's those called?
But that was after I tried to remember something.

Anyways, so, parachutes, gliding plane things and other things like that.
That makes 2 very tiny memories, and I'm not even sure if it was dreams, or if it was something I just made myself think was dreams.

So that wasn't a big success, unless ofcourse those two were actually dreams. But I got loads of nights to continue! I'm gonna try some other techniques tonight!

Thanks DreamingGod, and goodmorning to you all.
So, yesterday I decided to go for a WILD, but mostly just to get that extra chance to write down my dreams when the clock went off.

I failed. Hard. I didn't sleep. I was just laying there, untill the alarm went off, then it took maybe 1-2 hours before I finally fell asleep. And I don't remember anything today.

It may be good to note that these sleepless nights are not new to me. They come sometimes, mostly in holidays. Most likely because I tend to sit infront of the computer alot.
So, does anyone have some things I can do to help me sleep generaly? I guess sleeping is the first step, not Dream Recalling...

EDIT: Oh yeah, I find it hard sometimes to relax, mostly in my eyes, because if I just close them and try to relax, the muscles around my eyes begin to vibrate and twitch like crazy. Sometimes some of my muscles in my chest, arms and legs does it too, but only once and twice, but my eyes does it constantly. Even if I close my eyes right now, I can't keep them still. Is this normal?

I hope WILDing works for you. For me, my hands just get paralyzed...just to let you know its a pretty weird feeling. Once you feel your "hand" go through the bed, you can move it around...I just found this out two nights ago.... Anyway, my eyes twitch alot too when I try to WILD, its very annoying. I usually just blink a few times or rub them...but its obvious to me that you have tried this already. Good luck on lucid dreaming and a warning to you... beware Dream Lurkers... three ruined the longest lucid dream I had...

Woo! Just woke up today and actually remembered parts of my dream!
The two other 'dreams' I described werent dreams, I see now. But this one was! My cat woke me up today, and I opened my eyes and turned to see what she was doing. I saw her scratching something pretty close to my head. So I turned, and I just quickly saw the papers, the pen and a piece of paper that said "I will remember my dreams!" on the wall, and quickly tried to remember. Here's what I wrote...

      About learning/remembering something
      (related to moving/movement (sportlike activity)
      Unnatural / unrealistic
      Perhaps involving teleportation (Fighting?)

      "The more <something> the more <something else>

      Maybe's:
Self teaching, (no-one teaching me, as in solving a mystery/puzzle in dream)
In some way 'others' (Other DC's) would think of it as strange. (as in what I was doing in my dream made me 'strange')
The word "Experience" came to mind.. (??)
      Parkour?

That's what I remember, it was mostly feelings I remember, not as much visualy, the only visual things I remember was short small scenes of grass, me standing on concrete and turning around into myself, leaving some sort of trace of myself, like if more of me came each time I turned..
Mostly I just remember the feeling of trying to do something I found hard to do, trying to solve it.

That's really funny you should say that! Just when I tried to fall asleep yesterday night, I actually did feel my hands get hard to move, but not paralyzed. And yeah, the blinking (hard blinks) did help.
But damnit, it's really sometimes a pain with those urges to move my legs, and the itches on my head. Eeck!
      Hah... Dream Lurkers?

Hmm, I don't seem to have problems remembering dreams now.. I think I never remembered dreams before because I had went with a "Oh, I can't.. Then I guess I can't." attitude. But now I can just get better. So, I had a 'rather' wierd dream this time... Here goes.

      __________________________________________________ ____________
So, I saw myself in 3rd person view, standing on grass. Infront of me was a huge amount of wooden boxes piled up on each other. Suddenly, they all explode and even more small, green balls fly out. But not in a rubber-ball way, no, they flew up in the air and landed around where the boxes were. Some of the green balls have a purple outline. Much like the boxes from games like Crash Bandicoot (?? ), Ty the Tasmanian Tiger (? xD) and other games like that where you destroy stuff and get 'money' from the wrecking.
So, I ran around between the balls to collect them.

Now, I was with others and putting up some very strangely shaped metal pieces on the grass. I think we used the 'money' to buy these metal pieces so we could build them and climb up. I placed the first of them. And then I helped someone else that didn't know how to do it. As I walk towards some new boxes to destroy, someone (a girl I think) comes around the corner with a few people behind her. They were mocking us for our creation and thought it was all silly. Their walking on the walking path, and I cross it to get inside where there are some more boxes. This place looks alot like my own home.
Now I'm back to the shapes. I have helped the other person building his/her shape, and there were now two pieces standing on the ground, in the middle of them, there was a space for another shape that would fit the gab.
As I go back to get even more of the balls, the dream goes from strange to stranger. The girls are still there, just standing when I get out to build the next piece. But one of them goes from the crowd and walks up to me. It's someone from my class at school. He is an idiot, but there are many that are more idiot that him. So yeah, he walks up to me from the crowd, he's apperantly a transvestite in my dream, as he has fake long white hair, and a pink skirt. Very princess-costume like. In his hand is; One of those long plastic ropes with a hilt on each end that you then swing around and jump through it. As he reaches me, he starts swinging it at me, trying to hit me. I have a wall behind me so I cannot flee. But I have just enough space to dodge the hits. Now I'm waiting for the right moment to go for an attack. I wait just untill he swings it, and I run towards him, slightly crouched. He almost hits me again with it, but I hit him on the side of his head, and grab the fake hair. I then realize that it was fake, and let go again. Now we have some space between us again. Both of us getting ready for the next attack. He's the one to run at me this time. I use both my hands to grab his hand that is trying to hit me in the face, and unfortunately he is able to grab one of my testicles with his other hand! Ouch! So ofcourse, he just starts to squeeze it, and I woke up. It even hurt after I woke up! Eeck! D:
      __________________________________________________ _________

So, after I think about it today, I just remembered. Some years ago at the school, there was a 'party' where we had to have a costume. And guess what, that guy actually had the exact same costume from my dream. I have no idea how that memory have survived for so long!

EDIT: Oh, and by the way, I think I'll wait with the journal untill I got a few more dreams on paper, then I'll put this one and some new ones in that thread, and keep updating it from there..

What you were asking about in your first post is similar to dream incubation. Read the description below and then check out the link and scroll down to dream incubation.

      Dream Incubation
Though not strictly limited to WBTB, dream incubation's power to induce lucid dreams increases many fold when combined with it. Dream incubation is the act of pre-creating a dream scenario or scene before actually entering the dreamstate (ie. creating the scene or scenario while in waking life, then having said scene or scenario come up in a later dream). To induce a lucid dream using this method the incubator must either fashion a scenario wherein a dream character informs them of the fact that they are in a dream, or create a dreamscene where they will see something that will remind them of their dreaming state (a "dreamsign").

Dream Lurkers are dream characters from what I read are bad. There is a thread about them on this website(use the search). One of them beat me up in a lucid dream and the other two came and laughed at me! I might get back at them someday...
