The sleep cycle is a little bit complicated and has various stages.
REM increases during the later cycles. Near when you wake up
remember that your body is entering a state that must allow for your real
body to become virtually paralyzed
so that you are not prone to sleep waking.

To get there relax the body prior to drifting off to sleep and entering the early stages of light sleep.
