Help! I never realize I am falling asleep!

Whenever I am in bed trying to fall asleep, I never realize I am drifting off.
Last night I was trying to somehow induce LD by repeating a sentence over and over (question: would this even work?). I'm repeating it in my head, but without even realizing it, I had fallen asleep. Soon, I had woken up in my bed. I can slightly recall my dream, but only a moment of it. I don't remember ever falling asleep.
How do I learn to realize I am falling asleep? Is there some kind of trick I don't remember reading about?
      Thank you.

      EDIT:
Is realizing you are falling asleep necessary?

hey welcome to dreamviews what you are trying to do seems like a mix between MILD and WILD. so i will explain them both.

WILD stands for Wake iniciated lucid dream. Basicly it means trying to fall asleep consciously. I will give you an extremely watered down version of how to WILD. If you want a more detailed explanation, there are tons of tutorials around the forum. If you want a link i will give you one, but i will keep the steps extremely simple to start out.
Step one is to go to sleep and set your alarm to 5-7 hours later. When the alarm goes off get out of bed, go to the bathroom and make sure your mind is pretty awake. Step two is to go back to bed and find a comfortable position. Close your eyes and act like you are going to sleep, but try to keep your mind awake. If you dont fall asleep, you will eventually feel some crazy sensations or might see some pictures (Hypnagogic Imagery) which will get stronger till you do a reality check and find out you are dreaming! It is kind of an advanced technique, so i suggest starting with something easier like MILD. Which i will explain next.

MILD stands for Mnemonic Induced Lucid Dream. Which is basicly using autosuggestion to induce a LD. you should repeat simple phrases like, "I will lucid dream tonight" or "I will reality check tonight" or something of that sort. Keep repeating that phrase over and over in your head while you are going to sleep. It should be the last thing on your mind before you go to sleep. Hopefully, this will result in you having a LD that night.

those are both watered down versions of much bigger and better tutorials you can find on the forum. I hope this helped

Nope its not. there are tons of techniques out there that dont require you realize you are falling asleep.

Nothing is necessary. Its only a matter of what you are trying to achieve. If you are aiming for WILD. Well then yess, but another techniques doesnt need this.

About falling asleep. Welcome in club. I can only tell you. The more you practice, the less the chance you will fall asleep too soon. With practice, the interval will become longer.
