First of all, it sounds like you are using two types of 'vision' during your attempts.

Actual physical vision, seeing the backs of your eyeslids.... this is NOT the way to go. The whole point is to disconnect your consciousness from your physical body, and grounding yourself by something like your eyelids is something I've tried and seems to always fail.

By letting your mind flow, you are simply seeing the HI. This is what happens before you fall asleep, yes, and usually leads to unconscious sleep. You can use HI to get into a dream, so this is at least on the right track.

Now, my epiphany was that I am using the two incorrect types of vision while I am trying to visualize my way into lucid dreams (this is for at least if you are VILDing I guess). I would do the same as you and fail, fail, fail. During my visualizations, I would simply imagine a sort of view of whatever I was visualizing that didn't include me. Almost like a camera was hovering around the place I wanted to be. I kept failing, failing, failing, until I realized that my visualizing should literally be from my imaginary dream eyes. I should be able to see my hands, I should have to imagine turning my head to change what I was seeing... as soon as I did this, I got my first WILD after about 5 months of nothing. And I didn't even go through SP (http://www.dreamviews.com/community/...88&postcount=8)

So anyway that is my two-cents, hopefully you are having the same problem as me and that simple change can bring you success!!!
So wait...do I have to imagine my dream self...then see through my dream self's eyes? It's kinda hard to imagine what you're describing.
