I wouldn't lump visualization and daydreams together. Visualization, in the sense used by WILD tutorials, is not a daydream. A daydream has a narrative that is completely controlled by you. This won't do for a WILD. A visualization is a series of mental images that you just sort of let flow. Different thing.

I often do this sort of daydreaming as I fall asleep. It starts off as a daydream that I am in control of, but as I get closer to sleep, the story gets out of my control and I lose all sense of myself. If you can stay aware of this process, you can watch your daydream turn into a real dream, and become lucid.

I think it's the other way around. The daydream has the "dream" feature, letting go with the flow of the narrative. Visualization is the conscious mental imagery.

It's not impossible to reach the REM stage. That's what WILDing is all about.
