      convincing yourself that you're dreaming

one day i took a moment to tell myself that i was dreaming. i was able to convince myself for a moment with my selective enviorment tip for reality checks (my geometery class was my chosen enviorment) and after class, i drove home and took part of that situation to tell myself that i was dreaming and just went on part of the day pretending that what ever i was doing was just a dream.

and it was kind of weird but although i didn't have a dream about being in the class, let alone being at school, i had a lucid dream that night. note that when i realized i was dreaming, it was because i was bout to have the same dream all over again but i caught it.

now i have a hard time convincing myself. i ask myself "am i dreaming" and it feels like i'm just saying it. i think i just need to be more serious with my reality checks. any more tips? anyone... anyone...?

one thing that im trying right now is only rc'ing in 2 situations

1)when i wake up. this allows me to catch false awakings very easy.

      2) when something that doesnt happen happens.

ex. i dont really talk to my ex girlfriend but today she texted me so i did an rc becase my gf's or ex's tend to show up in my dreams.

its rare for me to talk to her so it could have been a dream.

ex2. this one is widely over looked. if you think about a dream and why you dont get lucid. its becase you are accepting crazy stuff for reality.

the only time i can think of doing this is movies. if you watch harry potter and someone casts a spell. you just accept it. dont. dont accept anything that doesnt fit. do a rc. durring the movie to conferm to yourself that its a movie

      try that

I've only recently started doing reality checks yesterday. Every so often I ask myself If I am dreaming, which is an obvious no...but, when I do answer I take careful observations of my surroundings and note anything out of the ordinary and confirm that I am not in the dream state.

My advice to you is to stop this way of thinking. It is damaging to your perception, keep this up and you'll find yourself confused and unable to think properly because a large part of your attention will be "you are dreaming and what would you do now that you are dreaming" instead of being in reality. It has happened to me and I had a hard time undoing what I did, and I had no LDs from it either.

lol oh sh*t. cus LaBerge states in his book (which was published in like 1985), that someone said that you can question your conciousness or reality atleast 5-10x a day for 3 weeks

"He advises the would-be lucid dreamer to 'try to remember for three weeks continuously that whatsoever you are doing is just a dream'"
      (132)

"We most often dream about familiar activities from our waking life, and if we never ask whether we are dreaming or not while awake, why should we do so while dreaming" (132-133)

I can see why you guys are against this. Thanks for letting me know.

Those are REALLY good ideas, in my opinion... I never thought about doing #2 before-- very smart idea!

I'm going to try to do this every day, and maybe sometime I'll actually have a lucid dream!

I think that is not a good idea. Give me a second to tell you why. As you said yourself, in dreams you don't get lucid, because you're accepting crazy stuff. So when you're accepting it, that stuff does not seem crazy to you at all. Remember, you're not lucid yet - if it doesn't seem crazy or strange to you, you won't make an RC and so you won't become lucid. Therefore your method is inefficient.

I'm doing RCs whenever I recall to make one, which is quite often. But you have to do them with dedication. Don't just automatize it, you have to find out if you are dreaming or not, even if you're 100% sure you're awake. The more often you do RCs, the higher the chance you do them in a dream with no special trigger and become lucid.
