can you only lucid dream in rem sleep or any stage of sleep? also, i heard that the first rem only lasts for 10 min. does this meen you only have ten minutes to get lucid or if you become lucid your only gonna have lucidity for 10 min.?

You can dream in any stage of sleep, so it follows that you can become lucid in any stage of sleep. REM is the most common however.

REM duration always varies, with the early periods generally being shorter. If the REM stage only lasts 10 minutes, you will probably have 10 minutes to get lucid and do whatever for the remaining time.

But I have a question...

When you WBTB, you generally put your alarm on and then you wake (hopefully) in the middle of REM sleep, to up your chances of getting lucid when you WILD.
Do you have to put an alarm on? I mean, I can naturally wake up after about 4.5-6 hours of sleep after my body has finished a sleep cycle (using a combination of drinking water and not putting a doona on). Can I do my WILD then? Do I have to use an alarm? The reason why I ask this is because if I wake between cycles, I can remember the dream I just had - Alarms ruin the chance of remembering those dreams.

If you can wake naturally then it is better not to have an alarm as you are not jolted awake and you can remain more relaxed.
