yeah, I think the same as you, discomfort generally leads to awareness, at least for me.
I tried something when first going to bed, but...for some reason, I lose consciousness and fall asleep.
what I do is...sleep like this:

as you can see, it's a tricky position, but it's possible.
I sleep like that, and without a pillow.
never fell asleep in that position, but I recollected some experiences, and this is what happens:
one must find the correct balance.
try lying in that position for a bit(at least 5 minutes, or...more...like 8 minutes)
now, if you hand hurts, then you are doing it bad.
always, when my hand start to hurts, after a few moments I lose awareness and change position.
but I found that when I do it right (I can't tell you which is the right position, you must experiment by yourself, it takes time) the hand hurts very very little, or it doesn't hurt at all, and when this happens, I never lose consciousness.
but never completed the phase and get past a dream, not even sleep paralysis, or something, because when I try at night, my hand hurts, that means,I do the position bad. but when I try in naps, in where I don't have enought time (just 10 minutes to relax) my hand doesn't hurt , I don't lose awareness, but I start to go to sleep very slowly, I reached the point in where your mind start to create weird imaginery(not HI yet) and sounds(today I heard a woman singing, I could control her voice, she singed things like "luucid dreaamiin blahblah") it was weird, althought, it wasn't exactly HI, because it didn't felt real as it being produced outside
but I will still keep practicing.
bye!
