Usually, you want to WILD after about 4-6 hours of sleep. If you don't wake up naturally around then, set an alarm for yourself, get up for a few minutes, then go back to bed, preferably in a position or place you don't normally sleep in. So for example, if you sleep on your side in bed, go to the couch and sleep on your back.
The reason WILDing might make you lose sleep is because normally you have to get up earlier, spend a bit of time awake, and then try to WILD, which may take you about 20+ minutes to fall asleep. (Getting up, then going back to sleep is also known as a Wake Back to Bed or WBTB.) So if you haven't tired it before, I do recommend you try it on a night before a day off so you can sleep in after attempting it.
Other than that, WILDing is perfectly safe. When you enter sleep paralysis, if you've never experienced it before, it may feel a little freaky, but rest assured nothing can harm you--AP is a normal function of the body which keeps you from sleep walking or acting out your dreams.
