Someone please help me with this Reality Check thing

Okay, so Reality Checks are very useful. (DUH!)
Well, on Saturday, I spent most of my day on Dream Views. I read and re-read the site, read people's dream journal's, read my dream journal over and over again, and I did A TON of reality checks throughtout the day.
I went to sleep that night thinking about what I would want to do if I had a lucid dream that night...I woke up. First of all, No lucid dreams, but second of all: I couldn't remember any of my derams! It's confusing. Because when I just ignore it, and don't do RC's, BOOM, I remember most, nearly all of my dreams, or I become lucid...
      I just don't get it.
Maybe I'm stressed about school...Or maybe because I'm sick?
      I don't know.

If the cheese hasn't moved why would you look for it else where?

The subconcious is not interested in what the concious mind wants. If it did I'd be a very happy man by now.... It only records what you did during the day so you should trigger the idea of reality check instead, just have a general idea of what you want to do in the dream but the main focus is the reality check action. As for the trigger you have to find out which method works best...MILD or visuals like an item that you reality check with by looking at it when you wake up in the night..alot of experimenting trial and error to get the idea of reality checking in the dream. Once you found the method you can try adding maybe the idea of switching on a light and expecting it to fail...build up your own story of reality checking until the idea of reality checking itself becomes what you want to do in the dream.

I've been having the same problem. I started trying to lucid dream a week ago (I've always been very prone to lucid dreams without even trying), two of the first three nights I had very short lucid dreams, since then I've barely been able to remember any dreams at all (which is not usual for me).

Like I read in another thread today, lucid dreaming takes dedication, so im just going to keep trying, and using the techniques.

I would be very interested to know why this is happening though

Try to use reality checks that cultivate the mental qualities that you wish to have in your dream. The challenge in traditional reality checks is that they can become mindless and habitual on a physical level. You might look at your hands but not become lucid b/c for some individuals you need to do something differently. You can for instance ask your self questions that require thinking or analyzing your short term memory to distinguish what dream of reality your in. For instance you might ask your self when did I wake up? When did I go to bed? Based on my answers & what is happening now which dream or state of reality am I in?/Am I dreaming?

I have developed my own set of reality checks. Try that out for starters. I have others if you like those, or you can try making up your own. Good luck.

Thanks for your good advice. When I used to lucid dream without trying it was usually because I realized the circumstances were unrealistic so it might help me more to use reality checks like you are suggesting as opposed to looking at my hands, and plugging my nose, which is what I have been doing.

Stress is a main factor. Don't get upset about not having any dreams. This will raise you're stress level. Just, chill out, and relax! It's not like you are going to die in a week or something, most of us have alot of time! Being worried and stuff only make things more difficult for you.

Try looking at you're hand, then remove it from sight, then rub you're hands together, fell you clothes with you're hands. Think about where you have been and where you are going. Then take you're hand up again, and check if it looks the same. The skin will feel different in a dream. Remember, quality over quantity when it comes to reality checks.

When it comes to reality checks, quality is better than quantity (though for best results, have both!).
