      TVILD (Television Induced Lucid Dream)

I'm not posting this as a tutorial or as a study that I've already done; rather, I would like to see if others have found this happen to them before and if, through studying, it would have any potential as a real lucid dreaming induction technique.

So here it is: what I call TVILD (I pronounce it TEE-vild, but you can say it however you want); it stands for Television Induced Lucid Dream.

I didn't set out to discover if such a thing was possible; I simply started to realize recently that my longest and best lucids have always come after watching a movie or TV show that features something attractive for a lucid dreamer. For example, I've had lucid dreams after watching The Matrix, or an episode of Heroes, as both of those contain sequences of humans doing humanly impossible things (flying, using telekinesis, healing instantly, being invisible, etc), and those sequences are thrilling and exciting. I see those scenes and think "I just have to go lucid and do that!" If I go to bed directly after watching, then there is a very high chance that I will indeed have a lucid dream.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there any way to make one film be successful over and over and over again?

I used to have an excellent method using the television: I'd leave the television on the news channel as a slept because I would dream what was being discussed (mostly prior to waking up). Therefore whenever I found myself in a place that I recognised to be popular in the media at the time, I would know I was dreaming! Has anyone else ever had this happen?

I've had two DILDS that I believe came from watching movies prior to going to bed.

The first one was after watching Eraser in which there's a scene where Arnie is falling out of a plane. My dream had the same sensation of falling and I became lucid that way.

My next one was from watching Vanilla Sky strangely enough. I'd watched it several times but for some reason I just knew I was dreaming within the dream later that night.

It would be cool if you could watch stuff on TV that could enhance your chances of becoming lucid, but I guess, after a while your mind would get used to seeing the same things over and over and it would stop working.

That's been my problem, too. Seeing something new has a good chance of working, but seeing something that I've already seen before doesn't work as well. I wonder why?

Perhaps if we could figure out what keeps it from working more than once, we could devise something that gets around this issue...maybe a few lucid dreaming videos, kind of like the MP3's? Or maybe if we actually merged a video and a lucid dreaming MP3? That could be interesting...give a visual side to an audio induction technique...

      You are dreaming

Believe your eyes but don't always believe what you are seeing

And see, I think that the visual element is a huge aid when it comes to dreams. Even if it's just a mental picture of a music channel, our brains strongly associate sounds with images. It seems to me that if we could give it that image along with the sounds (in this case, lucid dreaming MP3's), we could have a really powerful induction technique on our hands

The question is: what images would work best for inducing a lucid dream? Maybe clips from certain sci-fi or fantasy movies?

I used to have quite a few lucid dreams while leaving the radio on next to my bed. I'd be in the dream and hear what the night talk host was discussing, and in the dream I'd know I was hearing it from next to my bed while I was sleeping. I'd wake up and remember everything the host talked about even though I'd slept through it. So yes, that TV idea can definitely help.

If you intend to sleep with it on it needs to be loud enough to be heard in the dream, but not so loud it keeps you awake.

Maybe I should have explained what I meant by TVILD a bit better...there's other threads about using a TV while you go to sleep, but what I'm talking about here is videos that could induce lucid dreams the same way lucid dreaming MP3's do. I would have brought it up as 'Video Induced Lucid Dream' or 'Movie Induced Lucid Dream' but the terms VILD and MILD are already claimed for other methods. Honestly, I bet more people would use lucid dreaming videos on their computers than their televisions; that was just the only thing I could think of for the sake of the acronym...
