Well you could look at this two ways.
First is the more logical explanation...that you are experiencing hypnagogic hallucinations, which is typical during that trancelike state in between sleep and wake. These may come in the form of visual hallucinations, physical sensations, thoughts, and very commonly auditory hallucinations. So it's possible that you were just experiencing completely normal auditory hallucinations as you transitioned into a dreamlike state.
The other is the more "supernatural" explanation, if you believe such things...then you may think that you were indeed communicating with other spirits. There have been a few documented cases of people who enter that trancelike state in order to communicate and receive messages from somewhere else, perhaps a spirit, or the collective conscious, or who knows where. The most famous documented case is the renowned psychic Edgar Cayce, known as the "sleeping psychic" because all of his many thousands of predictions were made while he was in that trance state. Many channelers will attempt to go to that same state to receive information from specific entities, and the pen and paper may have hinted at automatic writing. If you want to explore it a bit more, perhaps you could give automatic writing a shot? If what you experienced was anything "real" then it sounds like there are several entities or spirits that are anxious to speak with you. You might want to explore self hypnosis, and possibly have a recorder to record anything you might say in your sleep. People like Cayce never had any memory of the things they said while in a trance. So you could be speaking in your sleep and never know it unless you sleep with someone else.
