Eastern could mean Vedic or Chinese.
Its not at all clear to me how much Greek astrology comes from India, and how much it comes from Greece and elsewhere, with Indians having subsequently incorporated some of the ideas from Greece into their astrology and rebranded it as Indian. Greek and Indian astrologers seem to have opposing views on this. The different systems are not consistent with each other, even though there are many similarities.
I don't think any of it is real in the sense of being a 'discovery' of a deep natural law. Its more like a system of magic that works because so many people think about it, and because there's no compelling reason for it not to work. By way of analogy, its like everyone driving on the right or left side of the road. It has to work one way or the other within a given society, and which way it works is largely a matter of convention. Technically we could drive on both sides, but we'd have a lot of accidents. In a similar way, the fates have to organize themselves too, and there's an interaction between our religious beliefs and how they do that. And probably there's some organization just for the sake of organization, sort of like how some people feel more in control if their pens and pencils are in their own drawers.
I can't recommend any good books, sorry.
