Although i cant provide the correct answer i do not agree with the cavemen sleep theory above^^^

ask any nero/biological/ motorfunction scientist/doctor or watever and they will laugh
simply alot of healing/chemical reactions and other things occur during sleep
cavemen would still rest......and if they didnt...then what about mammals, animals, reptiles ect???
      n00bs i love you

and take a look at nocturnal animals, i think they can still see during the day (right?), so if they can be active during the day AND during night, then why do they sleep? There's something long rest periods that helps us stay healthy.

Im not too sure about nocturnal animals awake in the day but cats can see in the dark and they are up at night. I agree that long periods of rest is healthy for your body, because thats when your body heals itself. Anyone else have any other ideas why we sleep?

Yeah, of course, I wasnt saying they dont rest. No one can live without rest. I was just sayin they could stay up at night, sometimes, if they wanted to, they would have fire as light for them.

They musta used fire to cook tha meat I guess, or most of them would have died from diseases from uncooked meat, like saminela (however u spell it)
      See you at tha crossroads...

I am going to do an experiment with sleep deprivation. I am going to see if I can last 5 days without ANY sleep. I will post everyday telling about my mental state and any improvements or problems. It will be interesting to see if i can last 120 hours without sleep. It will be difficult but I think I can do it.

Cavemen wouldn't have died from salmonella because it, if it even existed, would have been rare because they didn't domesticate animals; Humans today are sissies. Humans are the only animals that cook their food, they wouldn't have died, and I doubt that all humans along the evolutionary ladder had the intelligence to make fire.

Hell, I'll eat my kids if I can't support 'em.

I've had spontaneous OOBE's when doing a polyphasic sleep schedule amounting to about 2 - 4 hours of sleep total around the clock.

Well its about 4:00 in the morning and I'm doing alright. I'm not too sleepy, but what i'm feeling now will be nothing compared to day 5. All i've done is watch t.v. and watch movie to kill time. Does anybody else have any ideas on what I could do with my buttloads of extra time?
      P.S. I don't like reading.

Day 2 is over in about 3 1/2 hours. Im not as sleepy as i was last night. I have slower reactions but i view things differently, things i would have considered if i was in my normal train of thought. I have been seeing things that aren't really real but i don't think im hallucinating that much. I saw a towel over the bathtub and i walked by the bathroom and i thought it was my kitten looking over the bathtub. it was weird because immediately i looked back too see if it was real but then it wasn't. I also see shapes in the corner of my eye, but then i look and they're gone. These next 3 days will probably be hard, but it will be worth because of all of the hallucinations and the long...long sleep at the end.

Done before with scientists. Person lasted for a week. Became paranoid, believed the scientists were out to kill him and locked himself in the toliet to get some sleep.

Feel free to deprive yourself of sleep anyway.

5 days of no sleep is too long... I quit. I'll either experiment with the sleep every other day or the uberman's sleep schedule, but that looks like more work than its worth. I need some sleep.

seems like a very odd thing to try. I hope that someone got something out of all of this. I got:
don't stay awake for too long you go crazy
      you get paraniod
and you could kill yourself or someone else.

... seems like it was worth it to me for someone to tell me these things, now I don\'t have to figure it out on my own
Love like you have never been hurt before

yeah i meant like cavemen couldnt stay up 24/7 ect...

i believe natural feelings and instincts for warmth, light, cooking and such led them to use fires

today we use them for similar things....

I did experience hallucinations, but nothing I couldn't tell was a hallucination. I would see things in the corner of my eye and I looked that wasy and it was gone. Also in the dark at night, i would also see shapes of people and I got paranoid, but they weren't there. As for hypnogogic imagery, I didn't experience much. but when I was really tired I closed my eyes and started thinking about something, i would have a dream while I was awake, and I could control it. It was sort of like a LD. It was pretty cool. And the sleep at the end was sooo good.

      cool

By your times, it looks to me like you made it about 51 hours, maybe 51.5. Nice job, man. That takes a lot of effort. I would have loved to see what days 4 and 5 were like for you. I said once before in this thread that I made it to 65 hours. That's roughly 2.7 days. After two days I got so tired pretty much all I could think about was sleep. Didn't really have the focus or determination to do anything but keep myself awake a little longer. I think the only reason I made it longer than 2 days was that I was anticipating the New Year that whole day. So when I got to 1am I zonked out for like 13 hrs I think. It wasn't that great of sleep. Kind of like when people talk about sleeping like a baby. When you need sleep so badly that you pass out and seem to wake up minutes later. The coolest part for me is actually audial hallucinations. I remember hearing some really cool, very crazy music. But all my head noises got so loud when I was in silence that it started freakin me out. Had to try to watch tv or listen to real music pretty loud to drain them out.

I've tried that Nyquil thing. It's a trip! Trip and half for a little while. But after a few hours it goes away to some degree. The Robitussin thing is completely different, even though there are some of the same chemicals in both. The difference is that you can't possibly sleep after taking to much Robitussin. It's also a very different feeling. With a bit too much Robo, you feel wide awake, energized and you're thinking at a thousand miles per hour. Especially if you drink a lot of water and eat some kind of sugar. If you take enough Robitussin, it makes for a dissociative - akin to PCP but not as strong. You lose bodily control and your subconscious beings to pour out through your eyes mostly. The drug that causes this is called Dextromethorphan and I for one have screwed my liver up pretty bad doing it less than a handful of times. I think remnants actually stay in your liver, perhaps forever, because now when I drink hard alcohol I have some of the same feelings and the next day after drinking a lot I feel strangely wired with some of the same physical and metnal effects as drinking more than half a bottle of Robitussin. Fun to experiment with but really freaking bad for you.

The NyQuil challenge is nearly the opposite. You think and react in super slow motion and it's often and struggle to bring any logical thought to mind. Visions gets fuzzy as if you are fading into a dream. It take s a lot of mental endurance to not go pass out. I don't think taking 2-3 dosages of NyQuil is nearly as bad for your system as the Robitussin thing. But I have to admit, both are fun to do a few times and are quite unique experiences if you're into those types of experiences. But here's the bottom line folks - it's drugs either way. Just not as hardcore as most illegal drugs. So be careful if you ever decide to do either of these two things. If you're prone to addiction, beware please. Okay enough of my jibber jabber.
Just a friendly reminder to do a reality check. : ) Are you dreaming? How do you know?
