    Entry 17. My first lucid.

So, I'm really excited right now, let me lay it out for you, before I do though, I must warn you, it's nothing special.

On Friday, after a couple of nights with little or no sleep, I decided to take some Valium, my partner gets them as a prescription, so I 'nicked' a few of hers - don't tell her - and off to bed I went. I slept like a baby, as you can imagine and I dreamt of an old friend named Clint Diaso , I woke up and attempted to DEILD, but as I lay there I became more and more clear headed and so I got up to try my hand at WBTB. Neither worked.

Now, this is where it gets interesting, I don't know if it was the remnants of the sleeping tablets and I can't for the life of me remember what the dream was about, but what I do remember is at one point, the scene changed, right in front of my very eyes. I didn't need to do a reality check due to the fact that as soon as it happened, I asked myself if this was normal or was it a dream, then BOOM, I became lucid - I think - everything turned super, mega, hyper HD and I remembered the hand rubbing technique, unfortunately I then woke up rubbing my hands together.

Now as you can imagine, this excites me no end, I thought the lucid dream was something that would elude me forever, I'm older than I imagine most on here - maybe not, but the profiles I've read all belong to youngsters - and I always wondered if it's possible to teach an old dog new tricks, if you get my meaning.

So I'm reaching out to you folks for any encouragement and/or advice. Is this something that is normal, has it happened to anyone else, can I count that as a lucid dream, do you think it may have been a result of the valium in my system - no I'm not going to steal all her tablets, lol, she'd kill me - and is it usual to wake up still trying to stabilise your dreams. Any advice and pointers will be greatly received and I thank you all in advance.

      Congrats on the lucid!

I'm pretty new to this myself, but I bet several people could answer your other questions. I've become lucid a few times without reality checking, don't know how that works but it is possible! Heck yes you can count it - you recognized you were dreaming even if it only lasted a few seconds. The Valium could have had an effect but I'm not sure what that would be, if you're really curious hit up Alyzarin, she's a pro with neurochemistry and drug use. I think it is common to wake up while trying to stabilize, at least from what I've read. People even go so far as to bite themselves or lick the floor to stay lucid

Now that you've done it once, the worst is over! No reason why you can't do it again!

You're right on one count - it is more common and easier for the youngsters to get lucid - usually up until the mid 20's or so and then it seems to taper off for us older types. But don't let that discourage you - it isn't impossible, just statistically less prevalent. I'm 50 and I occasionally get lucid. Not often, but there are older guys than me knocking around on the forum who are lucid masters like Sageous for instance. I suspect in his case it's because he was a natural from a young age and kept it going as he passed the age barrier. But at any rate - now you know you can do it - you;'ve had a taste and it was sweet, wasn't it? Usually the 1st lucid is short and you wake up immediately - often from the sheer excitement of it. Or maybe you were already at the end of your REM period - sometimes lucidity happens just as you're waking up because the conscious mind is starting to go online and the reasoning abilities kick in before you're awake.

Anyway, now that you've found your way here, expect more and better ones! Welcome aboard!!

You're right, it was sweet, it's hard to explain, but once I realised I was dreaming, the whole thing was hyper realistic and as I said, I started rubbing my hands and woke up doing the same, heart beating like a steam engine, I should have tried to DEILD, but the excitement woke me and I forgot all about it. I just couldn't believe that I'd managed it. Anyway, as you said, now I've had a taste, even for the seconds it lasted, I'm adamant that I'm going to become proficient at lucid dreaming. I will of course keep you informed of any further advancements.

One quick question, does it become easier once you get a start, i.e. now I've had a short LD, am I more likely to find it easier, be it even a little..?
