Dream of: 06 December 2013 "Unreal Scenario"
procrastination is a sin
*My old friend Wunder (whom I first met in 1981 when we attended law school together in Waco, Texas) is visiting me early in the morning. Abruptly realizing that I have completely forgotten about a court case which is set for a hearing today, I quickly begin getting ready to go to the courthouse. I grab the files and leave with Wunder (around 30 years old), my mother (around 40 years old), and a child who is with my mother.
*We take an elevator to get to the courthouse. On the elevator I point out to Wunder that we are not simply going up in the elevator, but that we are actually moving horizontally from Dallas to the courthouse in Fort Worth where the hearing is being held. We quickly arrive at the courthouse, a place where I haven't been in years. We walk into a delicatessen on the ground floor of the courthouse and all sit down at a round table. I have a big stack of papers which I spread out on the table as I try to remember the details of the case.
*I'm utterly unprepared, but I figure I still have about an hour before the hearing will begin. I'm beginning to think that I actually have two cases which I've filed in order to dissolve an injunction. These cases have been going on for years and years and I don't even remember the details as to why I'm trying to dissolve the injunction. I haven't been in touch with my clients, so I don't know if they're even going to show up today.
Wunder looks at some of the papers and tries to be help me figure out the case. I imagine that he's astonished to see me operating in such chaos.
I also remember that in this case I filed a special motion and a brief which had something to do with nuclear power. That was years ago and now I'm not even sure that the nuclear power issue is even pertinent to this case. Now I can't remember any of the details of the case. I'm trying to figure it out, but time is running out, and I need to go upstairs to the courtroom.
When we all stand up, I become aware of my attire. I realize that I'm dressed inappropriately for court. I'm wearing a checkered brown flannel shirt, big light-brown brogan shoes, and blue jeans with a hole in the right knee. I also realize that the judge might require that attorneys wear a sports jacket and a tie. I think I might be able to run somewhere and buy a tie - I still have probably ten minutes before court starts. I look at Wunder who is immaculately dressed in a dark suit, a white shirt, and a blue tie which even has a little gold chain on it. I suggest that he might be able to lend me his tie, but he balks at the suggestion and seems disinclined to give me his tie. I figure that asking for his jacket would likewise be futile.
Being dressed this way seems a bit odd because I distinctly remember going to my closet and pulling out my old black pin-stripped suit. I know I haven't worn the suit in years, but at least it was still a suit. Now, however, I'm dressed the way I am.
*After we stand up, we hear a loud voice which seems to be coming from a loudspeaker. One whole wall of the delicatessen is a window through which we can look out onto the street where some kind of gathering is taking place. A semi-truck is sitting with its back open in the middle of a crowd and something which looks like the interior of a radio station has been set up in the back of the semi. A man sitting at a desk is giving a news broadcast on a loudspeaker. He sounds like Rush Limbaugh, but I can see that he isn't Limbaugh. Wunder becomes interested and he wants to stay and listen to what the man has to say. I figure that Wunder isn't used to seeing a spectacle like that, but I don't have time to wait around, so I head toward the elevator without Wunder. I think he'll join us when he's ready.
After boarding the elevator, my mother and I arrive on one of the upper floors of the courthouse where we find ourselves standing in a hallway. I think we are going to court #2 which is some kind of special court. Other attorneys all wearing suits and ties are walking around the hallway. I need to find out if the opposing attorney is already here. Maybe I'll be lucky and he won't show up. I know he's going to be astonished at the way I'm dressed.
I'm also carrying a big stack of unopened envelopes which I grabbed when I left the house. I quickly look through them, thinking I might have received something from the court regarding this case. I have all sorts of vanilla envelopes as well as regular white envelopes. I see one white envelope which looks as if it might be regarding this case. Since I'm in a hurry, I hand the envelope to my mother and tell her to open it. I look at a clock on the wall and I see that we still have seven minutes before the hearing. She opens the envelope and hands the letter to me. I see that it contains a motion "to remove stay". Its from an old bankruptcy case with which I didn't even know I was still involved. It seems curious that the word "remove" was used instead of the usual "lift". It looks as if it has something to do with Time-Warner. I think I need to attend to this matter latter - at the moment I simply need to concentrate on getting into the court room on this case.
I look for the docket sheet which I think might be posted on the wall, but I don't see anything. I need to go into the courtroom and check with the court clerk about the case. Since the case is so old, I can just imagine that it will be the first one on the docket and that I'll be the first one to step up in front of the judge. I wonder if I should apologize for the way I'm dressed, but decide that I probably shouldn't even bring up the subject - I'll just roll the dice and see what happens. At least I'm on time. Being late would have been a terrible disaster. The case would have then probably been dismissed and I would be pleading with the judge to reopen it. At least I won't have to be doing that.
I just wish I wouldn't have waited until the last minute. If I had just started working on the case one day ago, I would have been prepared. Now I have to go into the courtroom without even being sure what the case is about.
This whole scenario just seems so bizarre, I almost wonder if I'm imagining the whole thing. Maybe this is all just some kind of premonition. It certainly seems real, but I'm hoping that somehow this isn't even real and that I'm just imagining all this.
