      Question Odd, Kinds-lucid Dream

      So...
Last night I had an interesting lucid dream, and it was just a bit confusing. Anyway, while flying, i realized that I must be dreaming. Once I realized that and stood back on the ground, I tried to do some dream control. For some reason though, nothing really happened. It even got to the point where I was really questioning whether I was dreaming or not. I tried several different reality checks, (Digital clock, light switch) but they all seemed to work just fine, as if I was awake. That's what became confusing. I knew I was dreaming, but everything pointed to me not dreaming.

That being said, it was either the weirdest lucid dream I've ever had, or I can fly in real life. I dont particularly think the second is true, so I was just wondering if this is something that happens to some people often or if its just a freak occurrence? If so, how do you get past the "not being able to controll your obviously lucid dream" part? Also, are some reality checks more concrete than others?
      Thanks,
      Mike

The purpose of reality checks is as tools to help confirm that one is dreaming, but they may not work unless you expect them to work. There is no reality check that is 100% reliable, and when you are doubting your dream state, reality checks are likely to confirm your doubt as expected. So you need to first convince yourself that you are dreaming, and only then do a reality check. Oh, and while the purpose of a reality check is to confirm a lucid dream, the purpose of a lucid dream is not to produce a successful reality check. If you know you are dreaming, and reality checks do not work, consider dispensing with the reality checks. Not all lucid dreams will have as much control as you desire or expect. However, the more lucid dreams you have, the more likely they are to give you more control, if that is what you expect.

Lucidity comes in degrees: knowing that you are dreaming may not necessarily mean that you understand or are aware of those implications. Sometimes the brain can act so strongly to keep you from achieving a high degree of lucidity that you're often wasting time during a LD trying to figure if you're actually dreaming. Just be sure to know that when a few reality checks indeed work, you are dreaming. It's a matter of practicing over and over until you get used to discard any doubts after becoming lucid.

Just don't throw yourself out of a window before making several reality checks

Actually, even when a reality check fails, it is still possible to just know for sure that one is dreaming. Reality checks are not the final thing, they can be wrong, but one's knowledge of the dream may still be correct.

Completely true ^^ I was just referring caution since the OP mentioned (jokingly I know ) that maybe he could fly in real life...Once we had a person in here that broke his hand's bones by punching something thinking he was in a lucid dream, so you can never be too careful! ^^

Yes, that would be a problem. But on the other hand you get people desperately trying to get a reality check to work and refusing to become lucid due to reality check failure. Tonight I had a lucid dream actually during which my reality check failed, and I thought screw it, I know I am dreaming, I don't need an RC to confirm it. And only once I decided that did the dream oblige to confirm that yes, since I know I am dreaming it shall shift those numbers like I wanted them to in my RC and they refused to before. If I had let RC failure stop me from becoming lucid, I would have regretted it.
