Problem with flying

Hello,
Once again I have a question.
I have been reading a lot of threads on this site and a good chunk of them have people talking about how great it is to fly in your dreams. For me this is not the case. Every time I end up flying I can not land, and every time I try to land I just go higher and freak out because I can not land. When I start flying I am happy and I like it, but then when I try to land because I can’t and just continue to go higher.
Is there something I could do to help with this? My only thought on the problem is I am afraid of heights and it is somehow interfearing.

I do have to say though because of the just going higher, I have had a few dreams where I have been to the moon and had breakfast at a dinner there.

Thank you for all the help. And sorry for all the questions.

Why would you wish to land?

Most people have quite the other problem, that is, they find themselves running out of whatever fuel it is that keeps them aloft and they find themselves in a slow but inexorible decent.

So why not just enjoy the flying. Read a few books on flying, and set up something of a checklist on aerobatic maneuvers and tricks you would like to practice. I am almost certain that when you actually would like to stay up in the air, then you will find yourself like everybody else, that as soon as you want to remain airborne, you will find the ground coming up at you.

I agree with Leo. I absolutely love to fly, and really have to concentrate to stay aloft sometimes. I've landed on the tops of barns sometimes, but I usually try to stay in the air. The more you stress about trying to land, the worse it will become. So instead, you should try to just keep flying and I'll bet you'll land eventually if you don't concentrate on it. Good luck!

To keep one's mind off the ground, it might be useful to acquire a bit more enthusiam regarding the Art of Flying. I suppose a detailed book on Supernatural Levitation would be best, but Flying is Flying, and one of my favorite books of all time on flying is "Stick and Rudder". when I was a kid (50 some years ago) and wanted to learn to fly more than anything else, "Stick and Rudder" was my Bible. I looked it up .. its still published and it still sells well enough to be in the 'ship in 24 hours' category. Here it is right here: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearc...070362408&itm=1

Such a book will open up your imagination more toward the fun of flying.

I'm not scared of hieghts or anything, but if I was flying in a dream and couldnt get down that whould freak me out maybe even though your not good at flying back to the ground teleport down to the ground. or maybe if your good at makeing stuff appear make an elevator appear and let that bring you back down.

I have the same "problem", so I undestand why you want to be able to land or even just fly down low so you can see whats going on.
What works for me is either to stop thinking about and just drift down gently or else to concentrate on going downwards but like you I can't seem to just swoop down. The next time I find myself in that situation I will try turning my self in to a hawk and just fold in my wings and drop, that would be an awsome soloution to the problem if it works...

Hmm... I should add ideas on how to land in my tutorial.

As far as a fear of heights, I think that LDing would be a great way to conquer your fear. If you find yourself getting scared while you're flying, maybe find a person or an animal to fly with you and encourage you until you conquer it.

As for landing, maybe try tying some weights to your feet to carry you back to earth. Or as Senban said, try turning into something else like a bird. You could see body of water under wherever you are and aim for diving into it. You could even just try closing your eyes and envisioning yourself on the ground. With that, just take a few steps and know that you're on the ground, no longer in the air.

Anyway, I hope some of this was helpful.

Hello,
These are all wonderful tips Thank you for the help. I will start working on testing them out; as I have always wondered what it would feel like to fly in the waking world. So I would love to love to fly in the dreaming world and not be afraid of it anymore.

In my older dreams I had these goddamn annoying things that would err.. annoy the hell out of me. (They were so called ''tools'' that sucked), though some ruled (including the following

Anyway:

Instead of trying to land, you might want to try to shoot some kind of harpoon/hook kinda thing out of your arm or w/e, then when It impacts, imagine yourself retracting the rope/metal bar so that you basically pull yourself back to ground.

Should be easy enough

Great Idea. I will have to try this one as well.
Sounds like it could be a little fun as well. Thank you for the reply.

Ok, the problems you are having with flying are pretty common. What you need to realize is that dream activities require practice just like activites in the real world.
Ill bet you can easily overcome your problem by making it a goal. The most important factor in your success will be your confidence in your control. Dont ask yourself if you can make the right flight controls, tell yourself you will control it.
I talk to myself aloud in my dreams to reassure myself. By reassuring myself, I boost my confidence, and once I am confident, I take total control.
Say, "no, this isnt right, I need to go down there." Also, remind yourself that it is your world, and you have the power to do whatever you want. Just remember to be confident, and say ot out loud if needed.

Sometimes the unconscious power is too big.
You are flying upwards, look down and want to go down. But because you are in the air and looking down, you will only go back (as if your eyes propel you to the other side)

There's not much you can do if THAT is the case, not even practice really works if your unconscious (though I should call it subconscious? lol) is strong enough to manipulate your dream without you asking for it.

I have experienced many different stages of flight.
The first time I flew I was probably 15. I was in a Super Mario type world with Giant Toadstool Villages ( although I did not yet know this). I was in a bathroom and ended up getting in a fight with three girls. It was obvious that they were going to win. I left the bathroom and realized that I needed to jump real far to get off the toadstool and on to another. I got a running start and jumped off the edge, soaring. I soared for so long and realized "hey I can fly". So I just did so.
For a long time, I believed that that was the only way to fly, by jumping off something high up. I have tried many differnt types of flight, once I even sprouted wings. That is my advice, find out what works for you by trying different modes of flying.
Now I can take off like a helicopter, and land the same. This is my preferred way to soar, becuase It seems to give me more speed. Its also my fave, becuase Its my most recent accomplishment.
Cheers and good luck,
**Slick_nerd**

Wow, I didn't know there were so many ways to induce flight.
When I begin to fly it is either because I am falling off a high spot, like a roof, cliff or something of the like. Some times I will just be walking and I will begin to just float up into the air. I seem to have mobility with in the air I just can not land, because like I stated before, it just forces me up into the air higher and then I start to freak out and most of the time I will wake up.

Thank you for the reply, I will have to experiment with different was to induce flight and see if that helps as well.

This is a super old thread, but I have the exact same problem. If I'm flying outside where there is no roof to stop me if I go too far, I get really scared and then because of that fear and start soaring higher and higher... I did this tonight and I tried closing my eyes and imagining something else but instead I woke up.

Needless to say, I have an intense fear of heights.

Are you having a holy moment?

I have a fear of heights but in the dream it just goes away. Try to remember that you are dreaming and you can't be harmed no matter how realistic every thing is. If you can't seem to stop going higher, then try to spin in another direction, bear in mind that spinning doesn't always go to plan though.

Hope this helps.

I too have a fear of heights that disappears in LD. Leaving aside flying, I've stood on the rooves of very high buildings in LD, something that I would find impossible in the waking world.

I have absolutley no fear of heights, but i do have a small one of falling. Like falling from so high you can die? yeah. but this is really interesting b/c in almost every single one of the LDs i end up flying. i dont even care b/c it is so much fun. actually, its how i discern that i am in a LD and not a regular dream. for the landing thing, im not really sure , but you could try to have gravity pull you down, like make it pull you out of the sky. for if you fall really fast you cant die, you're in a dream. or just crash into something and hope you stop flying, like a tree or an airplane or water tower, depending how high you are. and inch your way down. but either way, Flying rocks.

flying the one of the most things i like to do while im lucid...my only problem is how to stop at a certain points and making sharp turns, without me pushing my legs on a wall. Does anyone know how to remove this restrictions? any help is greatly appreciated.

If landing worries you, just keep in your mind that you cannot be harmed and then let gravity do its job. Falling from a high distance in an LD is quite exhilerating

u just have to remember that you are in YOUR dream, that the entire environment has been created by your mind, so why should you not have complete control over anything in you're dream? if you have limitations in your dream, its because you have put them there yourself

A thousand pictures fill my head,

I cannot sleep , my mids aflight;
and yet my limbs seems made of lead.
