is there something going on in your life right now that you're trying to avoid? something that will take advantage of you? actually since you said your friend was the "main target" I think there might be something happening to someone you care about, and you feel for them, so in the dream the men were after you as well (because you have so much sympathy, you feel it happening to you too).
since you were "horsing around" to protect your friend, that makes me think that maybe the problem is being repressed, that on the surface, you are acting like it's no big deal, to protect your friend.
does this sound right? of course, you said the friend in your dream is not someone from your waking life. is there anyone you know from your waking life that has something in common with the dream friend? or, it is possible that the dream friend represents yourself. are you acting like something in your life is ok that you feel is really a problem?
the fact that the dream is unclear in the end suggests to me that this is a current problem that has not been resolved yet, you aren't sure what's going to happen.
since you've posted your dream here, you obviously believe that it has some meaning, that it relates to your waking life somehow. just go over all of your current problems. people usually dream about what is on their minds the most. (I believe some dreams really are insignificant, though.)
one important thing you should remember, when interpreting any dream: how you feel throughout the dream is very important.
