      Recollections from the 55th latitude

      Welcome, all readers!
This is my humble dream journal. English isn’t my native language (Swedish is), but I hope I might even improve my English by writing these simple narrations. All comments on my use of language are appreciated.

Night between 29th and 30th of April
Not much happening here, totally skippable.

I was supposed to take care of a baby, and the mother apparently was one of my uncle’s daughters, none of which are older than 7 …

Anyway, I don’t remember too much, just that I got stuck under some kind of small metal constructions … I can’t really describe them.

Then I read about child raising, how to make a baby sit comfortably on your lap. For some reason I read the word “Nahuatl” in there too.

Yeah … not very strong recollection this night, please move on

Night between April 30th and May 1st

      Fell asleep around 2 AM.

      First dream
My recollection of this one is a bit sketchy, I know I’m missing something here: our cat is doing some kind of dance moves on the floor, and I’m asking everyone to look at her, and I don’t remember if they did.

Then, my sisters stand together to sing a song (they sometimes do that around the piano), and the lyrics sort of float in the air around them. The floating text says that the lyrics are by David Byrne, something I found a bit hard to swallow, since they really weren’t his style. It’s a shame that I can’t remember any of the lyrics

      Second dream
I’m going down to my old school bus stop (I’ve had many dreams about that place). At some point, I’m naked, my clothes are strewn across the track that leads down the slope to the bus stop.

My nakedness doesn’t seem to be a big issue, because suddenly, a whole bunch of kindergarten kids come down the same track, and they don’t seem to notice me at all. One of the kids has got rubber boots, on which are written “Swedish–Icelandic dictionary” (yes, my linguistic nerdery is reflected in my dreams, cf. the mentioning of the Central American language “Nahuatl” the night before). One really talkative child brings up that he is studying (!?) Icelandic, and I remember that he used the actual Icelandic word læra for “to learn”, a word pronounced somewhat different from the Swedish equivalence lära.

All of a sudden, I find that I have forgotten my wallet at home, so I won’t be able to pay for the bus ride. I rush home to get it. For some reason, I spit on one of the church buildings that lie between the bus stop and my home. Up flies a kind of … pop-up window, condemning what I had just done. The last line says “Punishment: some kind of Chocico”, which to me, in the dream, sounded like some kind of chocolate product.

Woke up at 6:10 AM to write it down

      Third dream
      Not very exciting, totally skippable.

The scene is the nearby city of Malmö, population about 250 000. I stand at a bus stop reading a newspaper about corner shops that are closing down. It almost felt like a contest: “Which shop will have to close down?”.

I decide to visit one of these shops, and I go there by foot. The shop owner is an immigrant (like most corner shop owners in Malmö), and the first thing he says when I walk in is “You only came here because of that newspaper article, didn’t you?”, seems like business were really slow

It smells like pizza in there, but I only see home made pies and pastries (not very common in corner shops). There is a serving dish with various pastries, cakes and buns on it. We talk about their contents, and he offers me a bun for free. I finally decide to buy another three, so I end up paying 20 crowns for it (≈$3), and in addition I get a copy of the newspaper Sydsvenskan.

On my way back through the city, I think about where in my apartment I should sit when I eat the buns. But, even stranger: when I thought of my apartment, I thought of one I moved out of two years ago. I also felt a bit stupid for buying these things when I’m trying to lay off the sweet stuff.

Woke up at 7:20 AM to write it down

      Fourth dream
Unfortunately, I can’t recall enough about this dream – it seems to have contained so much more than what I remember.

My uncle and his wife came back to my parents’ place (my old home). We were making some kind of candy (all I remember about that is me putting small meringues onto … something). My uncle and his wife discussed various buzz words / phrases and in-jokes from their youth. This doesn’t really make sense, since they grew up in different parts of Sweden.

The only expression I remember now was Nej, tvång “No, compulsion”, but I have no idea in what situations that was supposed to have been used. The other expressions sounded more like nursery rhymes

Woke up at 10:30 AM to write it down, didn’t go back to sleep

I never even got around to do a reality check in these dreams – honestly, they’re not very surreal (however, I have never rushed down to the school bus buck nekkid, exposing myself to little children ). I guess I must get more used to reality checking during my waking time … hmm, still five fingers. I’d be very annoyed if I had just typed all this down in my dream! What if I bring a USB memory stick with me in the dream … it must work!

I hope for some surreal action tonight! See you!

      – I am getting it now, but am I really getting it?
      – OK, that’s enough.
      – Yes, it is enough, but is it really enough?

      Worthless!

My dream recollection over the past two nights has been nigh on zero. I remember that I have dreamt, but since I don’t wake up at night anymore (was that a one time thing?), I have trouble remembering much.

I’ll get back once I get better recollection, and I’ll keep counting my fingers and switching the light
