Lately (ever since I started school) my dream recall has gone down; dreams are no longer as vivid, and the details tend to fade away. I blame my alarm clock for this (but I don't trust myself enough not to use it since I have to wake up at 6 to go to school). I usually get 8 hours of sleep.

Are there any ways to wake up naturally?

Any help appreciated

I've had this problem and found that using a quite alarm helps immensely. I set my phone to vibrate as the alarm and place it near my pillow. Usually the slight buzzing will find its way into my dream and I wake up very gradually with dreams in mind. As a back up I turn on a loud alarm fifteen minutes after my phone, but I've never needed it. You can also practice waking up naturally by going to bed with the intention of waking at six, but set your alarms for fifteen after six. There are also alarms that you can buy specifically intended to gradually pull you out of sleep. They seem effective, but at a hundred bucks, eh.

Let us know how this works out.

I use the alarm of a wrist watch they arn't as noisy, and sometimes I'll wake up even before the alarm rings, so maybe you could set the alarm and turn it off, and your mind would expect you to get up, so you just would wake up atomaticly.

I recommend you set it at the begining of the day and turn it off right before bed, so your mind thinks it's still on.

It could also be the stress of school....

When I wake up at a specific time for over 2 weeks or so, I start waking up around that time naturally. For example, I almost always wake up at 5 AM before falling back asleep, as it's part of my lucky sleep schedule. Last night, I thought the alarm was on... except it wasn't. I naturally woke up at 5:10. (Although usually it would be earlier than the alarm).

Also, if you have an iPod or something like that you could have the alarm play a soft song that could wake you up, or maybe a custom made track telling you to "Stay in bed and think back to the dreams you just had."

That's actually a really good idea, because I always forget to start thinking about the dream I just had.

Hmmm does the ipod have multiple alarms?

This is not your alarm clocks fault.
Here are few possible reasons for diminished recall:
Dramatic change of lifestyle (from summer vacation to college)
Increased stress level
Poor college cafeteria food
Less time devoted to sleep
More mental activity.

Try taking vitamins, that helped me.

My nano has tons. I don't know what the limit is but I've used at least 10 alarms with it.

You could just be feeling stress at school, or that your sleeping time has changed to school hours.

I think the mind works well at waking up naturally when you trust it. Any habit of setting an alarm 15 minutes after the time you want to get up is not quite giving the mind the chance to rely on itself. That said, I understand why people are loathe to give in to the possibility of being late... but most people could also deal with a couple days of being late, in the interest of purging the obtrusive alarm clock, in any form, from their lives. Giving this trust over to our minds also makes us pay more attention to our sleep habits, so I find myself sleeping much better when I live without an alarm clock.

I've lived without an alarm clock for 5 months now, and never been late to work. The most effective way I've found to make myself get up early? Drink a medium-size glass of water just before bed. Not so much you wake up running to the bathroom, but enough that you'll wake up in the morning. Probably healthy too; most of us could stand to drink a little more water. I don't do this every night, but I have never slept in after doing so. Also, since living without an alarm clock, I've woken up on average an hour and a half earlier than when I used an alarm, and I've woken up more rested and energetic than in the alarm days.

Good luck, it's always telling when school diminishes the vividness of our lives!

Hmmm... Now I'm thinking of buying one...

Unless someone knows a program for a PDA that let's the alarms be music..

Well it was worth a shot

Yes. Drink way too much water before you go to bed. And then every time you have to awake and go to the toilet, drink more water. You will find that you awake after each REM Cycle so you can take a leak.

Yes he's serious! It's funny, try it and you'll have crazy dreams of peeing all over the place, and it will be the most glorious release of your life, waking or dreaming, and you'll wake up amazed that you haven't pissed the bed and you'll still get the pleasure of going to take one of the greatest urinations of your life!

Yeah seems a MUST for me with my terrible Dream Recall lately. I think you brought me to an Idea.
First off I'm going to have to experiment to Find out what time to set my alarm clock after going to bed around 00:00 since I usually still sleep way too deep when my Cellphone-Alarm goes off around 8 o' clock: I sleep right through it.

I think I'll buy one of those Wind Chimes, a Gentle sound. Put my Cellphone on Mute so it will only Vibrate. And then attatch it to the Wind Chimes so the Gentle Chimes will slowly pull me out of Sleep. Resourcefull way to get the same idea but then basically for free. I still have such windchimes in my garden I believe.

Worth to try. Costs nothing.

I beg to differ (or whatever the saying is). I often can't remember my dreams when I wake up suddenly like from an alarm or when a person wakes me up.

You see, when I naturally wake up and I have just had a cool dream the first thought on my mind is, "Holy shit! That was a kick ass dream! I need to write that down in my dream journal." But when I am suddenly jolted out of my sleep by an alarm clock the first thought on my mind is, "What the hell is that beeping noise? I should go turn that off." and I forget all about my dream.

Hey that's a good idea!
The problem I have with my cell alarm is I either sleep through it or it ends up being a part of my dream.
Sometimes I'll be looking for it all around my bed trying to figure it out. Sure does get annoying.
