Go through your dream journal and analyze where the content of your dreams comes from. Is it mostly day residue? Do you notice a lot of false memories or faulty logic in them?
Dream Content
I used to work the register at a supermarket / liquor store and dreaded every shift. The intense loathing I had for that place ironically meant I was always thinking about it; and so, like a shadow, it hung over my life, both in the waking state and in the sleeping state. I would get home after a long and dredgerous day and then, like a slave, work at that same counter all through the night. An example of major day residue brought on by huge amounts of negative attention that elastically pulled these experiences to me. I was my own worst enemy.
Since learning a little bit about the nature of the mind the amount of day residue in my dreams has decreased dramatically; from about 70-80% down to about 20-30%. Many scenes begin with WL events but then branch off into increasingly abstract scenarios and become more explorative in nature. In this way schema and day residue mix together to take the dream away from waking memories and into more imaginitive territory. I am pleased to announce that I quit my liquor attendant job in both worlds.
People I know in WL regularly make appearances in the DW; just as often, however, I notice alot of archetypes also. These archetypes are usually made up of the essential qualities of a group of people whom I know in WL (and whom I perceive hold similiar traits) projected into a single individual in the DW. (In WL these people who I have met throughout my life may not know each other; it is the percieved common thread that ties people of similiar personalities together that forms the archetype.) This creates many false memories: in the dream I "know who they are" but upon waking realise that they are totally unrecognisable. However, when recalling the dream, because they are archetypes, and because it assists in understanding and following the translation, I can usually swap someone I personally know with the dream character depending on who fits best (and come morning this is usually very obvious). I rarely have false memories when it comes to particular situations (so far as I can remember) which is interesting. It is mainly people.
I have not notcied excessive faulty logic. This could be because I pay more attention to the logical flow of schema instead of the illogical nature of the content; although this has more to do with scene transition than the scenes themselves (ie the scenes blend into each other in obscure ways but I do not notice this). Concerning the actual "physical" conent of the scene: very little faulty logic. I am mostly experiencing worldly situations where all our current scientific laws still apply. The most common form of faulty logic I notice is when I hover, which I seem to do alot of. This apparant lack may be due to hazy recall where I only remember the generalities of the dream instead of such things as the details of the environment, etc.
Overall, my dreams seem to be clearings of the past (succeeding at things I once failed at, processing confusing memories, etc), abstract metaphors of current mental conceptualizations, subconscious messages pertaining to present WL situations, emotional releases, and opportunities for demonstrations of emotional maturity - all tied together through the workings of schema. And because schema is dependant on deeply rooted ideas about myself and life, as I evolve in WL so does the potential for and the pace of self development in dreams increase. Thusly, I find this to be a self-perpetuating cycle: my "dreaming psyche" clears the way for my "waking psyche" and my waking psyche clears the way for my dreaming pysche. And the more clear the way is the faster growth can occur; its an acceleration. (The speed also depends on how aware I am during a dream and how much I am able to recall).
These two minds working together are really the same mind; a mind taking advantage of the potential that exists whilst dreaming by using reality construction to tailor self designed "lesson plans" that it can use for its own development. More accurately though, it simply appears to be evolving consciousness. Regardless, the more you realise this the more the waking world and the dream world can merge into one reality and the faster you can evolve. It's like when you awoke from a dream that felt so real that you weren't so sure if it was really a dream at all. Futhermore, you achieved something in that dream, and upon waking you now feel good about something. This is because the dream was real and you really achieved something in it. This achievement will carry through with you into waking life and increase your confidence in certain areas. The improvment in WL will then carry back through into the DW and all of a sudden you are going 100 mph. This is what I'm talking about.
Sorry Serenity went off on a tangent there. The question was about dream content and I just wanted to tie it all together for myself by linking content to schema, schema to the mind, the mind to one's life, and one's life back to content again.
Peace!
