Well, I use both Mac and a Linux distro. and I've yet to have a virus. Of course, I'm reasonable about things I download or look at on the net, but I've been using these things as my primary OS's for years and I've not had any viruses...Isn't that what you call "Virus Free" ?

Certainly not. I have used a Linux distro and I use Windows now because Linux sucked at one thing - although it may not be it's fault and instead hardware vendors, etc etc - and that is just doing the job. I mean, unless I hit Alt+Tab+F2 and route everything to /dev/whatever, follow through this dependency and the other nineteen, download some libraries that only one thing is ever going to use, restart, check your file attributes and compile it with these flags, I couldn't play a simple game or use programs I wanted to use. Of course, some worked real quick. Others were just like the above, and then there's a bunch that just didn't work at all. But I digress.

I too am reasonable about things I downloaded or look at on the net. I have no viruses. So, is Windows a "virus free" OS? Of course not. People are getting viruses all the time.

Anyway, that doesn't matter so much as it applies little to Mac or Linux. I've already churned through these arguments before with someone else, but let us say you are a virus writer.

      The Virus Writer Problem
You have the ability to create viruses, and really whopping good ones at that. Of course, you have to seek out a hole or use a known one, and take quite a long time to craft a great virus, but you can do it.

So which project should you take on.

Windows Operating System(s): Millions of people use this OS. There are TONS more people you could infect in Windows than there are in Mac or Linux. There are lots of virus writers using this OS, and there are many known holes and new ones being uncovered all the time by these hordes of people.

Mac OS: A very small amount of people use this OS compared to Windows. There are barely any holes that are known, and thus very few virus writers - 99% of them writing viruses for Windows now. You could spend a considerably longer amount of time making a crippling virus for this OS, but not so many people would be stopped by it.

      Linux: See Mac.

I think the conclusion there is obvious. You choose Windows. And therefore Mac is hardly ever attacked by anything in the first place. There is no such thing as perfect security or "virus free"..

      The Hidden Security Holes
As said before, there are few virus writers and alot less people using and tearing apart Mac and Linux than there are Windows (this is only re-enforced by the "oh, how i *hate* bill" mantra that you have to partcipate in to be cool or score a 'cool point', therefore there could be a huge security hole that nobody has noticed so far. In fact, there has to be. Windows was coded by humans, as was Macintosh and Linux. They are all suspectible to make mistakes, except some are in the limelight more than others.

      The "I Hate Bill" Thing
Everything Windows does wrong is magnified a million times by the 'I hate William Gates it is all his fault' opinon that everybody is holding. Basically, it's seeing things through a magnifying glass. One tiny slip up by Microsoft, a million people find it, then it's magnified by this "i hate bill" thing, out comes the old list of mistakes and Microsoft is left stuck.

      The "It's Evil" Thing
Tying in mostly with 'I hate Bill', the Microsoft is evil thing is once again magnifying things and making it worse.

      The "This is Cooler" Thing
Mac and Linux is more "in" than Windows. Windows is not "cool" and doesn't come in super stylish cases or with a million useless programs and hype. Nobody's exactly guilty of doing this on purpose, but hey, if everybody else likes it and it's cool, and it's your pet OS, you are gonna be biased.

So Why Don't You All Use <Insert OS>?
This is pretty much the most obvious one of the bunch. If any of these OS'es are as good as people say - virus free, faster, etc, why isn't everybody using it? You can't say everyone is in the dark about alternatives because they're not really. Word of mouth is powerful. If one guy gets a dream OS, he'll tell everyone about it and BAM, everyone else is using it. No OS is better than any other one. They all have their benefits and their faults. It's simple - if some guy comes up with a OS even half as good as some people crack them up to be, everyone will use it and they win. But that hasn't happened.

So, in conclusion, there is no such thing as virus free, no perfect OS, no perfect security, nothing even remotely like that. You were only on about viruses but hey, I went off and did it all. *shrug*

      (IMHO).

thats the point that my mom was making, and is makes sense, but I have to idmit the one I'm using is better then my last OS, it have IM, new programs, virus program that uploads itself, and alot of upgrades avalable, I'm not saying it's the best out there, but some OS's come close. and some are worse.
