Just wondering if there are any MMA fans around here? Im a huge fan, and am training/conditioning to hopefully one day compete in it.

I like it sometimes, it depends on the fighters' styles. Bouts often end up in boring hugging matches on the ground, but every once in a while I get treated to an unexpected surprise.

I think they should stop pussing out and just have televised, all-out street brawls. Sure, every once in a while someone would bring a gun, but that's what makes it great! It's got variety. It's diverse, the marketing department will say.

I've done a few MMA tournaments. If you're planning on competing I'd work on getting real martial arts training than physical conditioning. You can be a tough as hell, but if you can't block a punch to a pressure point then you'll go down easily.

This, the exact reason I think the UFC is crap. True Martial Arts is dying, all these fighters are relying on is grappling lately makes for very boring, uninteresting and repetitive fights that have nothing to do with any level of technique or skill.

But again, like Spart sometimes I'm treated to a nice match that I enjoy.

I agree, I hate matches that are all on the ground. It wouldnt be boring if they were more active on the ground, but their not, they just sit tight and try to slip every once and a while. Strikers need to man up again, its a reason why I kind of want to start competing too. Ive got enough ground to defend or pull a suprise submission, but I want to bring standing back

I'm the opposite. In small MMA tournaments (except for the black-belt only ones) tend to attract a lot of boxers for some reason. I've won most of my fights on the ground (mostly triangles and kamures(sp?),) however I actually move around and grapple. UFC gets boring when they go to the ground and just sit there exchanging weak punches. Good grappling matches are fun to watch.

Yeah Kimoras hurt like hell, the training I was in for a month or so, a guy put me in a Kimora, this was like my 5th class by the way, but I knew of no way to get out of it. I tapped, but he didnt let go, I tapped harder thinking he couldnt feel it through his Gi, he still kept applying pressure. One of the instructors noticed it and started to walk towards us to break it up. I didnt see the instructor, and I was tired of tapping with no result of ease, so I punched him a few times in his rib cage. He let go real quick. He was a solid follower of Brazilian Ju Jitsu only, I was studying BJJ to help out in MMA, Im already pretty damn good at boxing and Muay Thai. So I knew how to strike off my back in that postition.

The instructor said that my forearm looked like it was ready to just snap because of how badly it was bending. Swear man it hurt to wipe my ass with that arm for like a couple of weeks. Funny thing was that I got in trouble for striking, while he didnt get anything for not letting me go. This guy was a damn good practitioner of BJJ, I dont know what belt he was, but he said he had been doing it for about 5 years. We rolled again anyways, and then he sunk in a triangle choke, I tapped again because I didnt know how to get out of it. I knew how to apply one, but not how to defend it. But I was actually able to see him this time, I was looking right at him before my vision started to blur and he was smiling!

I didnt feel like blacking out without a fight, so I picked him up a good 3 feet or so in the air, then slammed him down on the mat. Again, he let me go, this time though I was asked to leave because I had already been warned once.

Huge fan. When I get the money, there is an MMA school out in Winter Park that I'm going to be attending. I'll never go pro with it our anything, but I want to learn some styles beyond the simple karate that I learned when I was younger.

And, when I first started watching MMA, I used to hate ground matches, too. That's before I actually got familiar with the techniques they are using on the ground. When you see all of the offensive and defensive changes they use, as they happen, and you actually recognize them, and can tell their strategies apart, it becomes much more exciting.

Also, not all fights go to the ground. Check out Sam Stout and Spencer Fischer's second bout. AMAZING fight. Besides, when the fights stay on the ground for too long, the ref stands them up to keep the action going.

      "Crap?" Hardly.
Granted, it adds another element which may slow down the action a bit, but that's how many fights end up, today.

I will agree that I like striking matches much better, though.

Big fan dude. I did Shotokan Karate for about 4 years and ever since I wanted to learn more and more. I'd love to travel to China or Japan and learn more from them.
I do agree, I'm not a fan of UFC.
However if you guys ever watch the Tae-kwon-do tournaments on youtube. Some are pretty damn brutal. Like a 540 Tornado kick to the head !

True, when both grapplers know what they are doing and they dont just latch on and wait it makes for an exciting show, since I do know what they are doing, I just hate it when the ref lets them lay on eachother throwing weak punches and not being active

I remember getting into a debate about this situation with a group of friends, the whole lay and pray method of winning by decision, or just in general grappling becoming too boring in MMA. I told my friends that if you understand BJJ you would appreciate the grappling parts of MMA, however, if a striker is facing a BJJ guy, and it goes to the ground, well thats pretty much just a BJJ guy trying to pull of a submission while the other one is trying to defend everything, thats it. That can be boring, but interesting at the same time to see how the guy gets out of so many sub attempts.

Then on that note we started talking about that aspect of fighting, a stand up guy fighting a ground guy, and basically it boiled down to this. A friend said that he studied wrestling in jr high and high school, and that he was damn good at it, even went to a few tournys. He said that as a wrestler, he could dominate all styles, this was a stupid thing for him to say since he had never went up against anyone except for other wrestlers. Nobody else had any fighting background accept for me, so I called him on it. Telling him that we could test his theory, putting his wrestling up against my Muay Thai. I have never been in any tournaments or anything, really even any street fights, a few brawls here and there, but thats it.

So we started sparring, and it was at full force, no pads or anything, even though I told him I would be happy to put on mits and knee/shin pads to protect him, he said no. Well it didnt last very long, he went into take me down, and I was able to sprawl a little and drive some elbows into his back. He backed off quickly, then came back and tried to take me down again, this time, I simply threw my knee in his face. He went out for a little while. He wasnt mad or anything, he realized that there isnt one single martial art that can truely defeat another one, atleast from what we know.

ha, that is a great story, I love it. I have a similar one except it was two striking styles. I am pretty well versed in TKD and Muay Tai, and this cocky kid in my school told me that the "martial arts crap" wouldnt help me in real fighting sports like boxing. He was a boxer. He bet me ten bucks I couldnt beat him at boxing. I took it and needless to say, there were so many times I wanted to kick, but I had to restrain my self. After 4 rounds, he quit, with both of his lips bleeding and his face all red. I didnt take the money cause I told him the emberasment of a football player being beat up by a soccer player was enough for him ...so yeah, no such thing as one dominant art, you have to blend them and learn to adapt!

Since it was one of your first class he probably seemed good. I couldn't see 5 years in any martial art enough training to call someone good.

As long as it's not olympic style TKD. I don't like watching those at all, it's all flurry kicking and that's not fun to watch, nor does it work in real situations.

Challenge him to MMA, I did that once. We took the best guy from the boxing club to a match and the very first move that I threw was a spinning rear leg sweep. He fell like a rock

Man, I miss Pride, where fighters actually kept active. Plus kicks to the head while an opponent was on the ground made fights more interesting.
Who's everyone's favorite fighter? I'd have to say GSP is high up on my list just because he's Canadian and is just great to watch. You also gotta respect Fedor, that man is a force, his record speaks for itself.

      Favorite fighters are...

      Featherweight - Jens Pulver
      Lightweight - Roger Huerta
      Welterweight - Marcus Davis
      Middleweight - Chris Leben
      Light Heavyweight - Forrest Griffin
      Heavyweight - Jeff Monson

Favorite lightweight was Jens, but since he moved down to featherweight and a whole other organization, still he is freakin awesome and I love watching him fight.

I saw a preview that one of the WWF guys is going to fight in the UFC. I hope he realizes that most of the techniques that work in scripted fights don't work in real combat.

      Some of my favorite fighters:

      Andrei Arlovski
      Georges St. Pierre
      Spencer Fisher
      Forrest Griffin
      Diego Sanchez
      Chris Horodecki
      Royce Gracie

And yeah @ ninja. I heard about that. I can't remember who the fighter is, but I'd love to see that. I remember a few months ago I heard Steve Austin on a radio show talking about WWF/MMA crossovers, and he was something like "Nah, I'm not one to run around saying that I can take one of those UCF boys. Those guys are the real deal. They're insane" etc. etc. and was saying something about how Goldberg said that he could take on any of the MMA guys, and Steve Austin was like "Bullshit. Goldberg would get his ass whipped!" LOL.

I'm sure the wrestler isn't Goldberg, though. I just can't remember who it is.

I want to see the fight just to watch on of those fake guys get their ass whooped I know it's not Steve Austin or any of those big names that I've heard of. Maybe it's someone with real training, it's possible. Ken Shamrock was a WWF guy once, but did lots of real training. You could tell he didn't know what he was doing in early fights because he used some submission technique that weren't real: ankle bars don't work against martial artists

I think who you are talking about is Brock Lesnar. He is in MMA and had a fued with Goldberg on the WWF/WWE. Also I'd love to see RVD ( Rob Van Dam ) Go up against one of the UFC guys. How high he can kick and where, is pretty incredible.
