      Painful Joaquin Phoenix Interview

So I'm guessing you've all at least heard about this by now. This thing is turning into and replacing the Christian Bale explosion. It's on the news, and it's a hit on youtube. Joaquin's legendary interview on Letterman from two days ago.

Here's a few parts of it.

      Watch the whole thing Here.

Though, it may be a bit painful to watch for some...

      ...yet extremely hilarious.

People are debating whether he was serious, joking, or what. It's actually not easy to tell. The beard doesn't help at all either.

      Greatest troll ever.

They were just talking about this, on CNN, and I checked it out for the first time.

      WOW.

I heard there was a lot going on with Joaquin, but (if this is serious) I had no idea it was like that. They just showed video of him falling down on stage, trying to a 'rapper,' also.

      ...I dunno.

My guess is that he's tripping on acid. Thats what it looks like to me. He has trouble forming sentences, he doesn't know how to react to the audience laughing at him, he's wearing purple sunglasses, and at the end he takes them off and leans in to Dave; possibly to try to explain himself and show his dilated pupils.

Although I read now someone in the youtube comments saying he has a social anxiety disorder, which would pretty much explain all of that too. I dunno. I'd have to see another interview with him on television to gauge the difference.

You didn't find this hot 9 years ago?

Anyway, I watched about a minute or so into the interview, then I closed it. He was rather quiet, and interviews are about talking, not about looking and acting funny and mumbling. That's called stand-up.

      This is an act.

Joaqin Phoenix is a great actor. He and Casey Affleck have stated they're making a documentary.

I guarantee it's an Andy Kaufman-esque act and this is a stunt to see how far MSM is willing to go along with it. They're probably laughing their ass off and working on their next Oscar.

Either that or he's just so chilled out on Xanax that he doesn't know how much of a misstep this has been for his career.

Oh, or he's pulling a Crispin Glover.

He was in character as "Rubin" the main character of his (then) new movie "Rubin & Ed"

It's been rumored that Joaquin is going to portray Rick Rubin in the biopic about him. This could very well be the same thing.

I found the bit where he takes off his glasses and leans over to Letterman at the end to be pretty interesting. Letterman says "good job" which could be taken a couple of ways. I'm inclined to think it's to do with the mockumentary he's supposed to be making, as Elis D stated.

I could watch this OVER and OVER again

      hahahaha

but in the last 2 seconds in the full clip when he takes off his glasses, his movement suddenly became quick and coordinated, so I think it was fake

Woooow it's SO obvious that it's FAKE. I mean it was really funny but, sometimes people's inability to detect a joke really boggles my mind.

There. That's my mind being boggled.

It may be a joke, but I don't think it is quite as obvious as you make it sound. If it is a joke, it has been running solid since october. There is plenty of circumstantial evidence behind it not being a joke, including his history of instability and his family's history of drug abuse.

He's a great actor, and I'm sure he's capable of dedicating himself to a joke of this magnitude, but the very length and scope of it should still leave a doubt in your mind.

It's about publicity. Look at how everybody is talking about it and making an even bigger name for Joaqin Phoenix. Follow the money.

Either he's tripping really hard on Acid, Making a big Joke, A combination of the former 2, or he's really suffering from Insomnia.

Either way I find this guy hilarious. Allthough I have no idea who he is and how he deviates from his usual appearance.

This was hilarious. I noticed a couple of times he smiled, and then quickly wiped it off his face. I'm almost sure this was a joke, he played off the audience really well.

That interview was awesome. Phoenix's comedic timing was perfect, intentional or not.

Yeah, this was awesome. I wish there was more stuff like this. There's a German comedian who gives lots of interviews in this fashion. A funny American guy is Neil Hamburger.

Yes the interaction with the audience was a big giveaway for me. I mean the atmosphere in the studio has "this is a joke" written all over it.

I suppose you can't say anything in life is for certain, but I think the probability of this being a joke is fantastically high.

I've been wondering about this too, and I really hope its all a joke. Because if its not, what a waste of awesome talent to stop acting to take up a rap career.

I've always really like Joaquin Phoenix and think he's good-looking in a mysterious sort of way. But that Letterman interview made me want to puke... gag @ the beard.

I can't understand that even if this is a joke, and it is a part of the mockumentary about his rise from acting to rapping, then what exactly is the connection between the way he acts during the interview and rap?

It'd make more sense to me if perhaps rappers were known for responding to interviews this way. It seems so unrelated to rap.
