Lightbulb Why Your Brain Needs More Downtime - Scientific American

Why Your Brain Needs More Downtime

First off - I am not sure where this should go - it is an article in Scientific American - but starts out about somebody going into a 3-month meditation retreat and spans very much territory afterwards.

Going into the scientific history of what has been thought and found about the function of several modes of down-time, not only sleep or dreams..

There are very many links going off from the article too - I am yet to follow them all..

So please - dear moderators, who might have an idea as to where it fits better - move it on over!

The article mentions the Default Mode Network (DMN) in a way, which is a bit controversial to another study I read - this one:

Mindfulness Inhibits Implicit Learning — The Wellspring of Bad Habits

Right - a lot of stuff - if you go into all the links esp. - but - enjoy!

Damn, should I read these? Or do I need some downtime first? But how will I know if I don't read them? FUck

157 is a prime number. The next prime is 163 and the previous prime is 151, which with 157 form a sexy prime triplet. Taking the arithmetic mean of those primes yields 157, thus it is a balanced prime.

Well I only read a little of the first article so far, but there's definitely some good info here. When I practice music I can only practice for so long before I have to take a break. And if what I'm working on is something that requires me to think I find it's best to just practice for 5-10 minutes and take a short break. If it's just scales or something that is mostly muscle memory I can usually work for longer, but still breaks are really important.

I've been on retreats and I don't think it's as much about time or emptying as it is about setting and habit. In a retreat setting you are constantly encountering your own thoughts and not encountering any one else's except maybe some spiritual teaching of some sorts. If you really face the core of a thought it is not so scary, it is just a thought. Much of our stress comes from our convincing ourselves that our problems are bigger and require more of a response than they actually do. And to a certain extent that is just human nature and this is beneficial for us, but it can also cause problems

I'm more interested in the second article though. It's something that's been in the back of my head from the moment I started doing mindfulness meditation. I'll read these both later though, they're kinda long and I've already spent way too much time on the computer.
