Senate CIA Torture Report Released: "Mismanaged Dungeons"

I've mainly stayed away from ED, since I've been back - knowing that past debates have had a tendency to take up unhealthy amounts of my time and patience (and sanity) - however, this is pretty big news... Anyone, who was around here during the beginning phases of the Iraq War, knows that whether the U.S. does or does not torture was a hot topic, at the time. Of course, all we could do in that time was speculate and voice our opinions and biases. Well, after 5 years, the Senate's report into the CIA's program of "enhanced interrogation" on terror 'suspects' has just been released. What's inside may shock some, infuriate others, and come as absolutely no surprise to others. I haven't read the full report, so far, but what's been highlighted by most media outlets is that these programs have repeatedly (often viciously) overstepped their bounds and gone through great lengths to try and cover up their actions. The blow-back from this report could go either way. There are many of us who had an idea of what was going on, but there are many, across the globe, who weren't so well-informed, and this could add gallons of fuel to an already raging inferno of anti-corruption sentiment toward the West. The worst thing about this report is that it really just confirms what most of us already knew.

I agree. To speculate is one thing. It leaves room for plausible deniability. To know what was going on...well...that's another thing, entirely... And to know that there were known innocent people caught up in the mix of this fiasco... Yeah. That's pretty bad.

Were they forcing things into the anal cavities of prisoners, or forcing them to eat excrement? .-. ------- On a scale of 10, how likely do you guys think it is that the release of this report will change anything? These are patriots and whatever the report says, if it diminishes their contributions to our country, it is way off base." Paraphrasing George W. Bush on the report: "Literally any criticism of the CIA is a priori incorrect. They could have a secret program involving the kidnap and murder of American schoolchildren. It still wouldn't matter. The CIA can violate any moral principle they like, for no good reason, and then lie about it. If any American citizen or indeed anybody else complains about it, they are automatically incorrect, because the CIA are "patriots", whatever the fuck that means, and that's a get-out-of-jail-free card for literally anything. This is literally what I'm saying and a large number of you will probably swallow it. Hahahahaha".

They strung prisoners up in shackles in freezing conditions for days. One of them died of hypothermia. It was all fine though. Totes legit. Not torture or anything.

Its very troubling that there seems to be so much going wrong with those in power in this country. Very troubling indeed.

Ahh, fuck... =/ And to think, there are people out there who will justify this. I've seen people (mostly on Facebook, commenting on local news pages) say things along the lines of "who cares? ISIS does the same thing!" It's despicable and depressing. People who ignore this report or turn it around and say we should first focus on groups who commit similar acts of savagery miss the point entirely.
