Read the Federalist Papers... the Second was almost the first, and it hadn't a thing to do with any "hobby" or sportsmanship. It was a recognition of the deadly seriousness and deadly power of lawmaking - which could only be countered and held in check by the People's ability to overthrow their government (again) if necessary. Then re-read the Declaration of Independence. Get your bearings back, and get your belief straightened out.
The Second Amendment is the reset button of our republic.
Was, anyway. As you have stated quite well, it almost seems quaint when recognizing the firepower of the government. It was never supposed to be this way... but that's no reason to change your understanding of what our nation's founders intended.
