I'm laughing because when I was a kid my Granny told me about how when someone died, they had to stay up all night, because "Cats will eat on the body." I guess they would have known back then. They were pretty hill-billy. Guess they didn't feed the cats very well.

Howie, you're totally wrong about animals not showing affection. My animals love me, all of them, and actually I get shown almost too much affection. There's been lots of fights over who gets to be closest to me. I have somebody on my lap at all times. And it's hard to be a three dog-owner with only two hands.

I meant that. My animals are emotionally attached to me. You might as well say people don't really have emotional attachements, they only seem like they do. That makes about as much sense.

Cats are much more primal than dogs. Even though they are domesticated they could easily live on their own and go bird/mice hunting in the afternoon and then cat fights at night. A dog wouldn't last that long, probably rely on going through garbage and eating its own feces. Don't get me wrong, this is why I like cats > too bad I'm allergic

      Yes, true, it does Moonbeam.

Take a look, I MEAN I DEEP LOOK! you're by yourself, so don't hide behind anything. From a possible truth.

Everything you do, why do you do it?

Attachments - key word. < an act of attaching or the state of being attached.
That has nothing to do with anything besides you!

Back to the topic at hand.
      Animals
We make the animals feel better. They know not what they do on any conscious level. They don't care
We feed the animals. It is what they require and do care about.

Everything you do, why do you do it?

      How long would you wait?

Me, I figure about 2-3 hours--I hate to miss a meal.

hmm im not a fan of pork at all and ive heard human tastes like pork, so i'd have to be pretty hungry. Though as long as there were cooking facilities, then meh i'd do it. I would hate to have to eat it raw, but then again i doubt many of us eat raw meat, bar sushi.

cat's are an ornament. cute and fluffy... but no purpose beyond sitting there and making you feel loved.

a dog will tackle you when you get home... a dog will defend your home... a dog will defend your life... a cat makes the house smell like litterbox and throws up when it eats its food too fast.

      ha.

I think cats don't care about us at all. They just want you to do things for them. Dogs will greet you with happiness all the time, play with you, and do things you say. I believe both dogs and cats do a lot of things just for their own sake, but I think dogs actually have a genuine love for humans.

PS: I had a dog save my house from being robbed and possibly my life one morning when I was a kid. My cat wouldn't do shit.

EDIT: My parents used to say that when I would be gone for a night or longer, our dog wouldn't eat or do anything but wait by the front window until I came back. I don't see why else a dog would do this unless they actually cared for you...

I think Michael made a good point. But cats will play with you do...you just need one of those lazer pens...point it on the ground, the walls and roof and you can watch your cat play pounce all day.

Yeah I don't know why people keep comparing the two - cats are NOT small dogs. They are a completely different species and therefore communicate MUCH differently. Vocalizing, body language, EVERYTHING is completely different. So quit trying to compare the two in how they express affection. They will never be the same, nor were they meant to be.

Not only that, but let us not forget about the history of the relationship between dog/cat and humans.

Dogs have been integrated into the human "family" since at least the days of the caveman. They were partners in hunting, scouting and self-defense. Some of the predators man and dog fended off were even of the feline classificatioin(?) - like the saber-tooth. The history is long and one of co-existence.

I'm not completely sure when and how cats became domesticated - but I'm guessing it wasn't until the Egyptian era. Although cats do live in prides, I don't think they have the same "co-operative" or "pack-like" instict that dogs have - they are quite independent by nature. Does it mean they hate us? No, just that it's not quite built into them to behave in a partnership-like way with us. When you compare them to the behavior of dogs, they come across as stuck-up, arrogant, prissy bastards (that they really are )

The reason cats were domesticated is not really clear to me, might have had something to do with keeping mice away. Or simply their beauty and easy maintenance. Who knows? Dogs, on the other hand, have had a natural and stronger bond in which there's a behavior of closeness there that most die-hard cat lovers mistake as being "dopey" or hyper.

I catch myself describing my dog with the stereotypical qualities of a cat all the time. She cuddles on my lap like one when watching TV (we're talking about a 45lbs. hunk of fur here!), she'll ignore me (at first) if I call her sometimes, she'll lay around on the couch stretched out all lazy-like. I literally say to her "why you being such a cat?!". If I had a cat, I bet I'd find certain times when it behaved like a dog too - we just dismiss them because we only focus on the expected behavior associated with the type of pet.

Well that's obvious, but the point is that dogs care about people, and cats don't.

What I mean is, I just don't feel companion ship with cats. They could give two shits about you as long as you feed them.
Actually, I don't think that either of the two are sentient enough to connect with us on a higher plane?
I just think that it is all instinct reflected back to look as if it were affection.

      Thoughts
      Burnsy - U know I luv U right?
I beg to differ. Your opinion about cats is one I've heard many times before.
Why does my cat come and sit with me exactly the moment I'm horribly, nightmare-ishly depressed being love sick? He knows I'm not gunna feed em in the middle of the night. Why does my cat, out of the blue, appear in my room, cuddles with me for some time and then leave again every 20 minutes or so? I defenitely do have a strong connection with my cats, one in particulair. It goes beyond words. Actually I can throw my cat halfway across the livingroom, then walk up to him and lure him in with my hand and he will just cuddle with me again. Such forgivingness. If only humans would be like that.

I guess your conclusion about cats is based uppon the fact that they're individualistic: They can take care of their own without the need of attention or company. Dogs are pack animals so logically they seek a "packleader" to obey to, which in case of a pet dog, is it's owner. It is why dogs are not to be trusted. Never for a 100%, cuz at one point, naturally, dogs will try to subdue their "leader" in order to move up the Patriarchal pack-ladder.
Cats don't need that, because naturally they live individualistic.

I think you may be confusing the souvereign, individualistic nature of cats with self-centeredness.

i think cats can at least care about you somewhat, like you said maybe a pride is more independent then a pack and a missing member is still missed. When i go to a friends house overnight or on a trip for several days. I often see my cat sitting at my bedroom window watching and my mum will say he's done it every day. Also he'll meow like mad and want lots of cuddles.

Same when me and my mum go to my grans say for a few days. my dad comes and feeds them and everything, but they still seem to miss us, sometimes we'll come home and one will sulk for a day because we left.
